I knew this guy who went to Russia and he met this beautiful hairdresser, really out of his league (he looked like an albino walrus with acne).  They fell head over heels in love and he sent for her and married her after two weeks in the country.  Shortly thereafter she sent for her "cousin" to come live with them.  Little beknownst to him they applied for about $75k in credit cards in his name, ran them over the limit and the two "cousins" disappeared forever.

Dumbest guy I ever knew.

Except maybe for that guy I worked with who took $40k in his 401k money and invested it all in Beanie Babies.  That guy was pretty stupid too.

(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,

 it was probably sarcasm)

It's all in the timing. The investor who bought the Beanie Baby rights from the original designer/marketer for something similar to what your friend invested, way back before anybody had heard of them, made millions. The guy sensed that these silly things would catch on big if marketed properly, and he was right.

Reminds me of The Sand Pebbles and the chief who married the Russian expat who ran off with his retirement pay and her "cousin" to parts unknown.

The crew ragged him mercilessly for months.

I knew this guy who went to Russia and he met this beautiful hairdresser, really out of his league (he looked like an albino walrus with acne).

The problem is, a really beautiful Russian woman will rapidly realize once she gets here how much more social value she has in the US than she ever had in Russia - since America puts beautiful women on a pedestal and empowers them like no other nation on Earth. There is no way the relationship will last unless the two aren't all that far apart in looks and background - an albino walrus isn't going to marry a "10" and keep her, no matter what, any more than he could attract and keep an American "10". A fairly good looking, successful American man, on the other hand, could manage to land and keep a stunning Russian wife...but such men usually don't have as much motivation to look overseas.

One of my employees recently met a Filipina woman online and married her. He had been divorced twice, and having met and enjoyed the company of several Filipina women in the office, he decided he might like to test the waters over there. He is certainly no "10", but he is a honest man with a good sense of humor. And his new wife is no "10", either, but she seems to have a good heart and to genuinely love him. So far they are very happy. Had he gone over there and come back with a Filipina "10", he wouldn't be able to keep her - but his expectations were realistic and the results have been very good for him so far.
