Lincoln in particular was absolutely hated and abhorred by a great number of Americans (and still is today). But undoubtably he was among the greatest, keeping the union together when all seemed lost.
I firmly believe that George W. Bush will go down as the greatest president in the history of our Republic so far. Greater than even Washington, Lincoln and Reagan. For Bush is one of the very few presidents who do the right thing regardless of public opinion. No other president would have responded to 9/11 by destroying the Taliban in Afghanistan and throwing Saddam Hussein out of power in Iraq. No other president would stay the course so resolutely in the face of such stiff opposition - because he knew it was the right thing to do.
History is already proving Bush right on the war against terror. Witness the chaos in France. That is the fate of those who believe appeasement is the way to deal with Islam.
For those who don't realize it, we are in World War Three right now. Imagine if Franklin Roosevelt had the guts to take on Hitler and the Nazis in the 1930s. Imagine how many lives would have been spared.
Well, this is the equivalent of what Bush is doing right now. Instead of waiting until the terrorists gained the upper hand, Bush decided to take them on now and damn the political risks. It is just the right thing to do.

Amen. History will not remember slightly higher inflation or a little higher spending. What they will remember is freeing the Middle East from the grip of Islamofascism.
I dont think its fair to compare any President on any scale too Washington. Washington is unique in that he was the first President and ruled like no other, he has been called our first and only monarch for a reason.
Bingo.
bump for later
Well, Sam ... at least we agree on this.
Unless I missed it, France was not even mentioned in the great Sun Morning talk shows. Such Silence by the media speaks volumes about Pres Bush.
Good evening. Three days ago, in large numbers, Iraqis went to the polls to choose their own leaders -- a landmark day in the history of liberty. In the coming weeks, the ballots will be counted, a new government formed, and a people who suffered in tyranny for so long will become full members of the free world. This election will not mean the end of violence. But it is the beginning of something new: constitutional democracy at the heart of the Middle East. And this vote -- 6,000 miles away, in a vital region of the world -- means that America has an ally of growing strength in the fight against terror. President George W. Bush
