HOLLYWOOD ROCKED: 'GAY COWBOY' MOVIE BECOMES AN OSCAR FRONTRUNNER

Arriving with nudity and explicit gay sex scenes between two cowboys, UNIVERSAL/FOCUS FILMS's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN has quietly become an award season frontrunner, interviews with Academy members reveal.

"It could very well be the last film standing at this year's Oscars," a top Hollywood producer not associated with the film explained from Hollywood.

"There was not a dry eye in the house at the screening at Telluride [Film Festival in Colorado]," says the producer, who asked not to be named out of respect for the cast and crew of the producer's own Oscar contender. "Watch it come out of the gate at the Golden Globes with super controversy."

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS critic Jack Mathews predicts the gay cowboy movie, which takes place in Wyoming, may be "too much for red-state audiences, but it gives the liberal-leaning Academy a great chance to stick its thumb in conservatives' eyes."

Director Ang Lee's movie staring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger won the Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice Film Festival earlier this fall.

But will a movie even Madonna calls "shocking" sit with the heartland?

Playwright and lifelong Wyomingite tells the STAR-TRIBUNE of Casper this week that she has never encountered a gay cowboy, and doesn't think it's right for Hollywood to portray Wyoming as a state with gay cowboys.

Her message to the writers of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN: “Don't try and take what we had, which was wonderful -- the cowboys that settled the state and made it what it was -- don't ruin that image... There's nothing better than plain old cowboys and the plain old history without embellishing it to suit everyone."

Meanwhile, Michell Howard of the state's Travel and Tourism Division says her agency is already hearing a buzz that people in other countries are expressing interest in visiting Wyoming because of the film.

“It's gotten rave reviews from the international community,” she said. “I don't know if they're more tolerant or something, but they're viewing it as a great Western movie.”

At last -- someone with the BALLS to tell us what Hollywood is all about.Sticking a thumb in the eyes of conservatives.

These people are beyond stupid. They bite the hands that feed them, and then cry about lowered "butt in seats" figures.

'My problem is that I find all that "pretend stuff" so boring, because as my tag line says...truth is always stranger (and more interesting) than fiction.'

That may be the reason I don't go to movies anymore. I just don't relate to the lack of reality. In my younger days, I might have been looking for more fantasy and escape. Now, with so much happening in the world, as well as my own private life & responsibilities, I can't afford not to keep in touch. Can't say the same for Hollywood.

Larry McMUrtry DID NOT write this. It was written by Annie Proulx, a native Wyomingite and author. Most of her stuff is pretty good. But I will not read this story, nor will I see the movie.

How would she know? It is ignorant to believe that all gay people prance around like the "Queer Eye" walking stereotypes. Chances are everyone on this board knows a gay person or two and doesn't even know it.

Isnt Colorado a red state?

The mere existance of Boulder, CO ruins it for the whole state. ;)

What a shame! Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility (1995) was a wonderful movie.

So was his Ride with the Devil (1999). One of my favorite Civil War films. Notable because in this film the good guys fought for the Confederacy and the villans fought for the Union. I thought it would've been too politically incorrect for Hollywood. Jewel (the singer) was pretty good in it as well.

I am so disgusted. I really liked Jake G. when he appeared in October Sky. Then, I liked Heath Ledger and Anne Hathaway. Crossing my fingers, I thought, "Please don't let these last-of-the-tolerable actors do anything to ruin it for me!" I give up. (well, actually, I gave up a long time ago, but I had held out a tiny bit of hope for a future leader on the silver screen.) we'll just stick with the animated movies, or none at all.

This is no different than the Hollywood agenda that proclaimed that stinker "Kinsey" a prize-winning work of art.

Ugh! I've been caught.

(That was the first episode I ever caught of the show, and I only got the last 10 minutes or so. Thankfully, my wife had seen enough to let me know which two characters thought that the other was gay (so I got the joke that they both thought they were capable of turning the other. If I'm not mistaken, it's the only episode with a final scene after the credits.)

Fun show, but I miss Jeff. He's just an irreplaceable original. The US version naturally sucked, but the guy who played Jeff was more Not Jeff than the others were Not them.
