Thousand cars torched in latest French riots Sun Nov 6, 2005 12:17 PM GMT

By Elisabeth Pineau

PARIS (Reuters) - Gangs of youths torched 1,300 vehicles overnight in the 10th consecutive night of violence in Paris's poor suburbs and major French towns, despite the deployment of thousands of extra police.

Cars were burnt out in the historic centre of Paris for the first time on Saturday night. In the normally quiet Normandy town of Evreux, a shopping mall, 50 vehicles, a post office and two schools went up in flames.

Authorities have so far found no way beyond appeals and more police to address a problem with complex social, economic and racial causes.

Evreux mayor Jean-Louis Debre, a confidant of President Jacques Chirac and speaker of the lower house of parliament, told France Info radio:

"To those responsible for the violence, I want to say: Be serious ... If you want to live in a fairer, more fraternal society, this is not how to go about it."

The deaths 10 days ago of two youths apparently fleeing police ignited pent up frustrations among young men, many of them Muslims of North and black African origin, at racism, unemployment, their marginal place in French society and their treatment by the police.

"Many youths have never seen their parents work and couldn't hold down a job if they got one," said Claude Chevallier, manager of a burned-out carpet depot in the rundown Paris suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois.

But authorities now say the rolling nightly riots are being organised via the Internet and mobile phones, and have pointed the finger at drug traffickers and Islamist militants.

Overnight, 1,295 vehicles were torched across France, the highest total so far, police said. An extra 2,300 officers have been drafted in.

Seven police helicopters buzzed over the Paris region through the night, filming disturbances and directing mobile squads to incidents. Overnight, police made 349 arrests.

The number of incidents in the Paris region was similar to the night before, but in the provinces it was up sharply.

TARNISHED IMAGE

The violence has tarnished France's image abroad, forcing Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin to cancel a trip to Canada, while Russia and the United States have warned their citizens to avoid Paris's troubled suburbs.

Villepin has combined a call for an end to the riots with dialogue with community leaders, youngsters and local officials, and has promised an action plan for 750 tough neighbourhoods.

"I'll make proposals as early as this week," the weekly Journal du Dimanche quoted him as saying.

But it remained unclear what could stop the violence, though some opposition parties have suggested a symbolic measure -- the resignation of Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.

Accused of stoking passions by calling troublemakers "scum", Sarkozy has ignored calls to quit. A survey published on Sunday indicated his public image was holding up, even if many disapproved of his strong language.

Villepin also has ambitions to be the right wing's presidential candidate in 2007 and has tried to position himself as a much more consensual figure than Sarkozy; the effect on the crisis on his ratings is still unclear.

With no end in sight to the nights of wailing sirens, acrid smoke, stone-throwing and destruction, residents from all ethnic backgrounds are tiring of the unrest.

"My kids can't sleep at night," said a mother named Samia in Aulnay-sous-Bois. "They hear explosions, they see fires and they think they're in a war. When the slightest thing happens, they get anxious and say 'Mama, what's going on?'"

The Muslims have been preparing for this forever. France is under siege yet completely unprepared. It is wild to watch a few million savages bring a major nuclear power to its knees.

I think it's time to cancel my subscription to that rag, which is turning into another National Enqurier.

I know what you mean -- I cancelled my local paper five years ago, realized I was only getting my news from links on FR and other sites, and was having to recycle the stupid paper! What a waste it was. How many trees die so those fishwraps can be published...?

It's the beginning of the fall of Western Civilization in Europe. Here in the US, Western Civilization has more time, but how much more? If it were up to the ACLU (just to pick a single example) we'd be out in front, falling faster than France.

Anyone heard a peep from Spain yet?

Sorry, all I get on the Spanish channels is this with the "call to prayer" playing in the background.

All you get is a little red "x" and a call to prayer? Spain has fallen to the Islamists! Their internet image hosts were the first to go {-:)

I don't know that much about France, but I assume there is just as strong a Christian-hating PC gay population there as here. I wonder if they're starting to get a wee bit nervous. I wonder if they're starting to think, hey, life under the Catholic Church might not have been that bad after all.

Do the Socialist Gay Elites of Europe know, for example, that homosexuality is a hanging offence in Iran? Do they think that it wouldn't be a hanging offence in a fully Islamic France? Do they really believe that?

And what about feminists? Aren't there any French feminists? And if there are French Feminists, what are they telling themselves about the abject slavery of Muslim babes over in the projects? Do they know about the gang rapes and face slittings (called a "smile") of the girls who dare to think a non-Islamic-slavish-bootlicking thought?

"Oh, it doesn't matter that those ghetto women live in abject slavery, after all, they are Africans. Nothing like that could ever happen to a real French Girl. Nothing like that could ever happen to me."

Is that what they tell themselves? Is that what they believe?

Mexican Catholic culture is 1000 times better than the Islamic filth the Euros are faced with. Count your blessings!
That's true, but a lot of immigrants are coming not to work but to commit crimes. A greater percentage than the general population. And once they get into prison, the Catholicism drops away. Prisons are infested with AIDS, syphilis, and Islam.

Your points are salient.

I do not believe that the larger portion of the muslim population are believers. They are more culturally muslim than devout. Unfortunately, they are illiterate and like lemmings they follow the leader. VERY dangerous.

The U.S. did the same thing with abortion. Because our Government (leaders) said it is legal, we illiterate, cultural Christians assumed that it must be "moral".

What a mess we've gotten ourselves into this time, Ollie.

We have much, much more social mobility than the French, and many more opportunities for work, even at the lowest levels. Because of their socialist economy, the people at the bottom are truly trapped in a way that they aren't here (not that that excuses anything). European countries live with chronic unemployment rates in double digits.

Though I rarely listen to news about that bastion of debasement, there's a few things I remember from over the last 1/2 dozen years. I'm not sure which year presidential contest it was, but Chirac was up against a candidate that was against the free flow of immigrants, while Chirac was all for it. The press was somewhat unkind to Chirac's competitor, considering him a hard liner, while praising Chirac as a humanitarium for throwing the gates of France open. I don't remember the name of Chirac's conservative opponent. No mention was made on where to house these "welcome additions to French Society" (/s)

Turns out his housing plan was eerily similar to our own left wing politician/civic leader/quasi reverend plan; basically, keeping all these people who would be so grateful for generations of handouts massed and centralized where hatred for their oppenents could be easily nurtered and votes could be gathered by the truckload:

http://www.city-journal.org/html/12_4_the_barbarians.html

The next thing I remember was Chirac outlawing Islamic head scarves, I think it was just in schools.

I'm surprised it took them this long to riot. What I'm wondering now is if there ever will be a substantial response, or is this a new, permanant way of life for the French?

[...The Muslims have been preparing for this forever...]

Since Queen Isabella fought them back to Jerusalem. She would be so disappointed in Spain. She spent a fortune to stave off Islam.

Could be that he actually wants to know what is going on instead of crafting reality to suit his purposes. Don't we all take this step on our journey to conservatism?

Anger as French riots spread to rural Evreux
06 Nov 2005 17:01:59 GMT
Source: Reuters
By Paul Carrel

EVREUX, France, Nov 6 (Reuters) - If 50 cars and a shopping centre can be set alight in a small town in rural Normandy, then perhaps nowhere in France is immune from a wave of rioting by disaffected young people.

The fact that residents say it was only a matter of time before Evreux experienced the violence that has engulfed the rundown suburbs of Paris for the past 10 nights, speaks volumes.

"This was to be expected," 49-year-old resident Francis Hurier said on Sunday, pointing to the charred remains of a pharmacy where the stench of smoke hung in the air hours after firefighters had put out the flames.

"There are no jobs. Jobs need to be found for the young people," said Hurier, who is himself unemployed. "The cops are also too aggressive."

As in Paris, it was a housing estate inhabited by immigrant families where angry youths used vandalism and violence to express their frustration with a society they feel excludes them from jobs and is too ready to treat them roughly.

It was the deaths of two youths electrocuted in a power sub-station as they fled police more than a week ago, which ignited the passions of ethnic minorities already incensed by racism, unemployment, police treatment and their marginal place in French society.

Some 50 cars were torched in Evreux overnight and the shopping centre was damaged by fire when youths went on the rampage through a housing estate on the edge of town. Two schools and a local police station were also damaged.

Conservative Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has promised to clamp down on the violence, which has spread from the Paris suburbs to other provincial towns around the country.

The opposition Socialists have criticised Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy's "zero tolerance" policy towards rioters, whom he has branded "scum". Sarkozy has responded by drafting in an extra 2,300 police.

"Sarkozy made a mistake by talking about 'scum'. That provoked people. This is the result," said Hurier, who has lived in Evreux since 1982. "These youngsters ... just want a job and respect."

RACISM, NO JOBS

Simmering anger mixed with a sense of resignation among the locals gathered outside a burned out block of shops in Evreux.

Local Socialist councillor Michel Champredon, who runs a local housing association, said unemployment and racism were the root causes of the trouble.

"There are poor job prospects for a big chunk of the young population, especially those of immigrant origin. That creates a sense of injustice which builds up and can then degenerate into violence."

Other people were less understanding.

"This is too much, stop! Stop, do something else, but not this, not violence," said one local woman in tears.

"My wife's out of a job now," said another visibly angry resident. "I've got two kids, a house to pay for and a car loan. What do I do now?"

Jean-Louis Debre, the city's mayor and speaker of the French parliament, echoed the government's tough line.

"A hundred people have smashed everything and strewn desolation. Well, they don't form part of our universe," he said.

Champredon said the marginalisation of immigrant youths only fed the tension that led to the violence.

"There is a lot of discrimination when it comes to job recruitment," he said.

Local youngsters expected more violence on the outskirts of Evreux.

"It's civil war now," said one in a hooded top.

The above is the latest from Reuters.

"My father and uncle are still around; though I think they'd find it even harder for them to scale the cliffs at Normandy. Perhaps there's a wheelchair path there now!

They saved France from itself before, they'd probably volunteer to do it again."

First, God bless that generation and what they did.

But there is a real danger here. There is a right wing in France and it's growing. By right wing I don't mean falsely labeled conservatives - I mean the kind of people who would have cheered the Nazis except they hate Germans too.

They had a viable Presidential campaign last time around and if they take over France, their strong anti-semitism and lack of respect basic individual rights will make wish we had Chirac back.
