Tehran, 4 Nov. (AKI) - Iran is confident that it will not be referred to the United Nations for sanctions. "I am convinced that the next meeting of the council of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will not refer Iran to the security council of the United Nations," said one of the principle negotiators, Javad Mandouri, who was quoted by the news agency Fars in Tehran.
Referring to recent statements by the British foreign minister Jack Straw, in which he said that there is no clear information on the nature of the Iranian nuclear programme, Mansouri said that it "makes one think that Europe is taking a step back after realising that its pressure on Iran had no effect."
The IAEA last month passed a resolution submitted by Britain, France and Germany, which paved the way for Iran to be reported to the UN Security Council over its nuclear activities.
The EU countries and the United States are concerned that Iran's uranium enrichment programme could be used to build weapons. Iran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful and designed to meet its energy needs.
Tehran recently restarted work on the early stages of uranium enrichment.
I smell a pay off.
My thoughts exactly...
Iran has 10% of the world oil supply...it is rediculous for them to state a need for alternative power that will cost them more to produce than oil. it doesn't make sense for obvious reasons. it also explains why their nuclear sites are so spread out and underground in mountainous regions.
They are fellow Muslims. Anything they do is for Allah, so we don't mind and will ignore everything.
Gee, what a surprise...
Oh, gosh, lookee there - another delay tactic! I'm not even sure there was any payoff involved here; I think the UN scum are so delighted by the whole idea of Iran having nukes, they'd help 'em for free.
We should "refer" Iran to the Mk 84 2000lb bombs we should have already been dropping on their heads by now.
