Drinking fine for Military underagers may drop to $5 (WI)

Underage military members would be able to enter a bar and consume alcohol in Wisconsin with a possible fine of $5 under a proposed Assembly bill.

In a public hearing Thursday, state Reps. Mark Pettis, R-Hertel, and Terry Musser, R-Black River Falls, supported Assembly Bill 651 in front of the Committee on State Affairs. The bill would allow 19- and 20-year-old members of the U.S. military to enter a bar and consume alcoholic beverages with a valid state ID card and a valid military identification card.

The underage drinkers would be subject to a fine of $5, and the bar could also receive a surcharge of $5, all of which would be deposited in the Veterans Trust Fund.

“[The soldiers] have been without their mother and father’s guidance while serving in wartime,” Pettis said. “[We need] to treat them with respect.”

State Rep. Barbara Toles, D-Milwaukee, said she was concerned about the bill.

“[They] will be with friends who are not in the military, buying drinks for them,” Toles said.

Pettis said only military personnel with valid identification would be allowed and addressed the issue of drunk driving.

“Drinking and driving won’t be a problem [because] the Zero Tolerance law will still be under effect,” Pettis said.

The Federal Drinking age was 18 yrs when I was in and all stateside Navy bases adhered to that.....

Regular drinks were 10 cents and top shelve was 25 cents at the enlisted club.....

It only took a dollar to get sh!tfaced......

Now I understand that the NCO clubs adhere to the local civilian policies......

Society turns a blind eye when Frats and Sororities have Keg parties each weekend while communities, enforcement agencies and politicians give a wink and a nudge but let the kid's who volunteer to risk their lives to protect our country drink.....Ooohh Nooooo....

Hypocritical B*sturds

This is absurd. "OK guys, here's the plan ... you're old enough to vote ... you're old enough to die for your country ... so we've decided to let you buy a beer and we'll only charge you an extra five bucks." ABSURD!

Really? You must be in a different society and community than I'm used to seeing.

When I was in the Navy, I would just hand over my military ID like I hadn't a care in the world. They would look at it for a couple of minutes and hand it back. Only one bartender looked on the back where the birthdate was. He had been discharged a year or two earlier and knew where to look. Of course that was a while back when people were less concerned about underage drinking.

"$5 (WI)"

$5 Wisconsin, huh? How much is that in Canadian, eh?

Is that like metric money, only with brats and beer?

It's okay but we'll fine you anyway.

1st. Turn off your jackass mode
2nd. Realize the possibility that sarcasm was used.
3rd. Try and respond with some civility next time (even if youre trying to play "gotcha")...itll earn you more points.

Up until the day I retired I would advocate to every commander that we allow our young airmen to drink on base at the clubs.

My reasoning was that they were drinking off base now even with the laws. By allowing them to drink on base near their dorms, there would be no drunk driving, just stumbling! If they were old enough to maintain, program, and fly on multi million dollar equipment and face enemy fire then why the hell couldnt they have a damn beer.

It is a stupid policy DoD adopted to adhere to local laws and in my opinion has caused more problems than it solved. Man I remember the Arimens club back in the day.. There are reasons I will never drink Tequila again :)

My policy: $5 covercharge for military underage. No other underage admitted.

In Indiana, underage drinkers cannot enter a liquor store (even with their parents), or enter the bar area of a restaurant.

My dad is a social member at the American Legion and a "Sons of the VFW" (my grandfather was in WWII and my uncle was in the Navy). (or the other way around).

When we go upstate for hunting, we usually go to the VFW and get drunk silly for $10. I'll never forget walking up to the bar and asking for (1) bloody mary, (1) Schlitz, (1) double Windsor (straight) and (1) double Crown Royal (straight). I pulled out a $20, handed it to the bartender, she gave me $16.50 in change. LOL!

My dad said they only have to be shutdown for 1 hour per day. That's usually around 5am-6am.

I am a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Catholic War Vets and the Black Vets in my town. I love sitting around drinking my face off for cheap, and the characters in these establishments are infinitely more entertaining than the kevin federline/brittany Spears types that inhabit the cliquish bars...

Females are ALWAYS able to get into bars, as young as 15. I've never seen them stopped.
