November 4, 2005 -- WASHINGTON Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, a Republican trying to become the state's first African-American senator, is demanding an apology from Sen. Charles Schumer over an Internet link to a blog that includes racially based attacks on Steele.
The blog, run by Steve Gilliard, who is himself black, portrays Steele in minstrel blackface and calls him "Simple Sambo."
Gilliard had also vowed to show Steele as a "lawnboy" but instead ran a caricature of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas with this notation: "They all look alike, don't they?"
The Schumer-led Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee took down the link after Republicans complained.
The DSCC had previously sparked an FBI probe when two staffers illegally got hold of Steele's credit reports.
"I've never received a personal call from Chuck Schumer to have an apology from him," Steele told WTOP radio.
But spokesman Phil Singer said the DSCC "apologized repeatedly" over the credit reports and he saw no need for Schumer to do so personally.

The liberals are so tolerant, aren't they?
Schumer is responsible for his staff. Well, at least he should be.... But that won't happen.
Schumer wouldn't lower his glasses down his snotty nose to acknowledge the situation, much less participate in an apology.
Hillary could get some mileage out of this if she were smart... oh yeah, right,,,IF
Oh, now isn't this nice!
The President had to apologize for Mother Nature and the actions of FEMA afterwards, why can't Chucky apologize for this?

Why is a New York senator casting asperions at a Maryland candidate for senator?
He's too busy reading all those credit reports.
The liberals are so tolerant, aren't they?<
And they don't know history. The young black "lawn jockey" figure, was commissioned to honor a revolutionary war hero kid that took care of Washington's horse. He froze to death at Valley Forge. Washington wanted to honor him and commissioned the sculpture.
The sculpture was very popular, and was used by the underground railroad to tell fleeing slaves if the road ahead was clear. Red cloths on the statue meant there was danger to slaves.
But they are not taught that history.

Steele is a dignified man, does not deserve the treatment he has received. I doubt Schumer will apologize, probably is chuckling to himself.
Wow!
I had no idea. Thanks for educating me.
Because he is a potential rival in the next democrip primary. Attacking him now puts her on record as apposing racial slurs (linked to Chucky) in the upcoming primary. Logical long range planning hat is probably beyond Hitlery's capacity.
Because Chuckie, last I knew, is head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
Howard Dean would be demanding an apology. Where is the head of the Republican Party? I admire this man and his accomplishments. I am one of the little people but I demand an apology for the denigrating of this honorable man.
Because that NY Senator is in charge of Senate campaign fundraising for the Democrat party.
I did not know that - thanks for the history lesson!
Steele was on Laura Ingrahan this morning, He said when the democrats threw oreo cookies at him at a 2002 campaign event he looked at them and thought "Do you have any milk?"
