The family of the only soldier the U.S. Army lists as missing-captured in Iraq will get a face-to-face meeting with military officials on the status of their son, days after the Ohio family complained about a lack of information from the government.
The parents of Army Reserve Sgt. Keith "Matt" Maupin, of Batavia, Ohio, are being flown to Washington for a Pentagon briefing today. Maupin has been missing since April 9, 2004, when his fuel truck convoy was ambushed by insurgents west of Baghdad after leaving camp.
"We're bringing the family to the Pentagon to provide them with a progress report on the ongoing search for their son," said Army spokesman Col. Joseph G. Curtin. He said Maupin's status is unchanged.
The Army also is paying for the family to stay in a hotel overnight. Curtin said the Army wanted to bring Maupin's parents to the Pentagon so they could speak in person and ask questions.
Parents Carolyn and Keith Maupin complained earlier this week when they learned about a new search for their son through the news media -- not the Pentagon.

Soldiers including Staff Sgt. Max Donahue, left, of Texas, do a grid search through the bush for a missing soldier Sunday. Army Reserve Sgt. Keith "Matt" Maupin of Batavia, Ohio, has been missing since April 9, 2004, when his fuel truck convoy was ambushed by insurgents west of Baghdad. An Army task force has looked for him since then and got information that he may be buried in the area being searched. Donahue says that they wouldn't leave a wounded or fallen soldier behind and want to bring him home. The soldiers in the photo are from the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division.
PING
I pray that they bring this situation to a closure. Finding him alive would be so uplifting for this country, while finding out that he did die would bring closure to this distressed family.
This is certainly more humane treatment of the parents of an MIA--contrast John McCain and his temper tantrum dissing parents of MIAs who wanted the government to find their sons. What was he afraid we would find out if we went back in to Viet Nam?
BTTT!!!!!!
Ditto.
Exactly! mcPain and his pal sKerry have sanitized the VN MIA/POW issue.
The difference between then and now.
Thank you for the ping, FMC. I couldn't say it any better than "taxesareforever" did. Prayers for Sgt. Maupin and his family.
bump
Good move by the Pentagon. Prayers for Matt and his family.
