The colonel in charge of the National Guard at the Louisiana Superdome in the days after Katrina said the shelter of last resort was a miserable place to be but that the behavior of the residents was misrepresented.
Colonel Thomas Beron said there were no murders and that the people were receiving food and water.
"There were no homicides, he stressed. There were six fatalities. I'll tell you, I helped load every single body onto the FEMA trucks after the superdome was cleared."
Beron told members of the New Orleans City Council that he wants to set the record straight. He says there were some deaths in the dome, but they resulted from natural causes, an apparent suicide and a drug overdose.
Beron also said that most of the 35,000 evacuees were orderly, and though it wasnt gourmet, they werent starving.
The facts were we were fed twice a day, an MRE and a bottle of water, and after Wednesday, when we got more water, an MRE and two bottles of water in the morning and in the evening."
Beron said that members of the National Guard remain in New Orleans, providing extra patrols in every police district in the city.
"We're on the lookout for looters, he said. We're looking out for people who are where they're not supposed to be."
Beron says there is no date set for a pullout, adding that the guard's mission is likely to last months.
So Nagin lied? Nah...
In other words, the media and the leaders of the rat party lied. Problem is, no one will care now will they? They have moved on so to speak.
So while we all bear some fault for buying into those stories of mayhem sooo easily, methinks that the MSM was happy to peddle them because: 1) they sell papers and air time; and 2) they furthered their Bush-bashing agenda.
My impression is that this person wants to put on the record his first-hand experience -- because what he saw didn't match with what the media and government reps said.
Thats how Kuwait got America to fight it's border war with Iraq for it. Almost no loss of life by any Kuwaiti military or civilian at great cost to the American taxpayer.
Sensationalism baby it gets those soft hearted Americans calling their congressman every time.
Good post.
Nagin is such a liar and so is the media .
My small town had 200 evacuees from the SD in our shelter. Most had been in there for a week. It was filthy, hot and smelly...but every person that I talked to told me they had MRE's and water. The biggest complaint was the bathrooms...and some horror stories about women giving birth amid the filth.
