Candidates Start Early in Iowa for 2008 Presidential Race

DES MOINES, Iowa — Politicians seem to be lined up out the door and down the block these days for the chance to win friends and influence people in Iowa. The goal? To impact the course of the nation for at least four years beginning in 2008.

In October alone, Iowa was visited by 10 potential presidential candidates for the 2008 campaign. The swell of visitors came less than a year after the last race ended.

"I wish the process didn't begin this early, but it does," said Sen. Evan Bayh (search), D-Ind.

With more than 26 months until Iowa kicks off the presidential gauntlet again, the early start is about capitalizing on a rare opportunity.

President Bush is term-limited and Vice President Cheney is not running for his seat. The race of 2008 will be the first White House race in 56 years without an incumbent president or a sitting vice president in the contest. It's wide open, at least for Republicans. For Democrats, it may be less so.

The article cites only a handful of Republicans, no conservatives, who have recently spoke in Iowa.
When he does make an appearance there, I can't wait to the images of Giuliani speaking to Iowa farmers gathered in one of the local's barn.

I grew up there, and my parents moved back when I started my undergrad in '99. My Mom lived in Chigaco for years and through the '68 dim. convention. She told me that she had never seen anything like last years election. Statewide, cities blocking so many streets off as candidates 'might' be coming through for a quick speech. Said it was just nuts.

I'll bet she can't wait for this! My poor mom, maybe I should send her some chocolates or something to cope...

The best place for fried pork tenderloin in Des Moines is located on Army Post Road...look for the plywood pig sign. Hillary and her Hollywood friends could use some real food instead of the brie and croissants of the liberal elites.

"It brings back great memories of being out here and being out here and being out here," joked Kerry

Well, at least we know it was not JFK's great sense of humor that cost him the 2004 race. I think the country would be better off if the Iowa primary/caucus was held after Memorial day.

Important members of Draft Pence have spent the last week in Iowa. What we have found is Huckabee and Brownback have a lot of soft support.Romney has alot of people fooled.Frist amazingly is still making a run at it,and with solid support! No other Conservative is getting support save Tancredo. To man all the people who we have spoken to are waiting for something better, they WANT conservative leadership.Iowa is ripe for the taking.Mike Pence is well on his way to having a great ground game in Iowa.

We've had Brownback here several times, Huckabee, Tancredo and Frist come to mind.

Romney's "I'm a conservative" ruse won't last long. As soon as opposing candidates start exposing his pro-abortion, pro-Roe v Wade, pro-homosexual agenda record...

How would the country be better off? Are you suggesting that the entire primary/caucus process starts 4 months too early, or (more likely) that Iowa's first-in-the-nation status is bad for the nation?

After the Iowa caucuses, I can see the want ad:

For sale: One slightly used, heavily starched Carhart Jacket. Will trade for ticket back to New York.

The only reason Huckabee and Brownback have support is because they have been here a few times already. Huckabee is good friends with ultra-lib Iowa Governor Vilsack, which could hurt him. Frist spoke to an Republican Party of Iowa dinner so his name recognition and visibility went up.

Most Iowa conservatives are waiting to see who decides to run.
