Judge Apologizes for Muslim Holiday Order

Thursday November 3, 2005 7:01 PM

LONDON (AP) - A British judge apologized Thursday to a suspected Islamic militant ordered to appear in court for an extradition hearing on one of the Muslim calendar's holiest days.

Haroon Rashid Aswat, 31, is accused of trying to set up a terrorist training camp in Oregon, and the U.S. government is seeking his extradition. He appeared in London's Bow Street Magistrate's Court on Thursday for the first day of the hearing.

``It is the most important day of my religion today - Eid,'' Aswat told Judge Timothy Workman, referring to the festival of Eid al-Fitr that ends a month of fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

``For me it is not a problem,'' he told the judge. ``I can understand it is about technical difficulties. But for these people doing these bombings in this country, they are very simpleminded - they take it as an insult.

Workman apologized for the timing of the appearance, saying: ``If I had known we would have picked a different day.''

U.S. lawyer Clair Dobbin said Washington was seeking extradition in relation to ``conduct which took place between October 1999 and the early stages of 2000, which involved the setting-up of a jihad training camp in Bly, Oregon.''

Aswat's case was adjourned until Nov. 24.

We can be very simpleminded as well, as to what (and when) their punishment would be. I'm sure they can understand that...

Eid is the most important holiday on the Muslim calendar. Did you know this? I never knew this. I never even heard of it before. In a way, it makes sense, because if you've been fasting for a month, you'll be damn hungry, so it is very important to eat. You can see why they look forward to it.

Now, I always heard that Ramadan was the most important holiday on the Muslim calendar. Except, it's a month long, but every day of Ramadan is the most important Muslim holiday. Ramadan is a whole month of fasting, which means not eating regular meals during daylight hours. I don't know what this accomplishes, because all one has to do is pig out as soon as the sun goes down. Ooops, I just used the word pig, which is an unclean animal to the Religion of Peace. I apologize.

The whole most important holiday thing kinda puzzles me. You have the day before Ramadan, the month of Ramadan, Eid, and presumably Mohammed's birthday as the most important holiday on the Muslim calendar. It's just like Moslem holy cities. It seems like every city in Iraq is a Holy City, for some reason or another.

And what about Muslim clerics? It seems like anyone can be a Muslim cleric. And nobody ever says what it takes to be qualified, or what sort of training or education it takes to be a cleric. Looks to me like all you need is a black turban and a mean expression on your face.

And spelling isn't a particularly important aspect of Islam, either. Is it Moslem or Muslim? Is it Quran or Q'uran or Koran, or what? Is Mohammed or Muhammad? We need to have these things cleared up.

...or Mahomet? That's what the British used to call him - of course, they also called the Moslems "wogs", which is apparently a BIG insult, but I'm not sure why...

It's no wonder they treat us with contempt and think nothing of killing us, when we react like this, to such blatant rubbish.

If only the judge had said, well it sure doesn't seem to stop you bombing, sit down and shut up.

``It is the most important day of my religion today - Eid,'' Aswat told Judge Timothy Workman

"Great! So it will be an extra-special occasion for you," the judge didn't answer.
