Top Democrats duck on Steele hits
Washington Times ^ | November 3, 2005

Posted on 11/03/2005 6:41:55 AM PST by Irontank

Three of Maryland's top Democrats -- including the two leading candidates for governor next year -- declined to repudiate comments by black Democratic leaders who said racially tinged attacks against Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele are fair because he is a black conservative Republican.

Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan and Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley, both white and running for governor, ducked direct questions about the propriety of the black leaders' remarks, which The Washington Times reported yesterday.

"Steele's got a record there that he has to defend. ... I think he is open to criticism in a number of areas," Mr. Duncan said after a tree-planting ceremony at an Olney middle school named after civil rights icon Rosa Parks, who was buried yesterday in Detroit.

"If there are criticisms to be leveled, they should be leveled on issues," Mr. O'Malley said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Harbor Bank of Maryland, a black-owned bank in Baltimore.

....

The Times reported yesterday that several black Democratic leaders said using racial references to attack Mr. Steele were fair because of his politics.

"Party trumps race, especially on the national level," said state Sen. Lisa A. Gladden, a black Baltimore Democrat. "It's democracy, perhaps at its worst, but it is democracy."

State Sen. Verna Jones, Baltimore Democrat and vice chairman of the General Assembly's black caucus, said black Republicans deserve criticism because the GOP has not promoted the interests of the black community.

Even the spokesman for Mr. Mfume's campaign said pelting Mr. Steele with Oreo cookies and calling him an "Uncle Tom" are simply "pointing out the obvious."

At the center of the debate is the News Blog -- a liberal Web log run by Steve Gilliard, a black New Yorker -- which removed this week a doctored photo of Mr. Steele that depicted him as a black-faced minstrel and referred to him as "Simple Sambo."

Here is the liberal blogger Steve Gilliard's contribution to this election...

Oh yes, hypocrisy rules the day again, when it comes to libs -- it is OK for them, but not for conservatives!!!! What a miserable bunch of stupid people.

This is beyond despicable. Apparently based on the color of one's skin, one is not allowed to be an individual and have one's own political views.

The obvious being that the 'throwers' and 'callers' are racists and on the off chance one of those cookies actually hits any one, they should be charged for assault (with a cookie). Idiots.

Someone needs to make a cookie that is black on the inside and black on the outside to signify black on black crime. It might also signify that the black "leadership" has screwed the black people for more than forty years.

How the American Left has become a racist...

It has long been so. It was the northern left which formulated the closed-shop rules for unions which had the effect of denying freed blacks employment. The black prospective employee was willing to accept less pay which would undercut the higher wages paid to union members.

I am beginning to think that Steele is going to win. He will certainly be helped by this. And Dims being dim they don't think they should disassociate themselves from such remarks.

Just ask Michelle Malkin. She was on O'Reilly the other night talking about how the lefties always hit her with a barrage of racial slurs.

Duncan: "Steele's got a record there that he has to defend"

So does Duncan think that "defending" your record includes dodging items thrown at you (oreo cookies)?

I wonder if there are any large items that could be thrown at Doug Duncan as a metaphor for positions he has taken.

They have always been racist. What could be more racist than insisting that blacks cannot take care of themselves, and therefore must have special considerations in employment and education? This should have insulted the blacks in this country, but clearly, they enjoy the perks more than they worry about the lack of respect.

Yes, and she is a gorgeous woman of Philippine descent. I do not think she was born there, but my wife was.

The American left hasn't become racist, they have always been racist.

They merely won a propaganda war because they own the press.

I'm thinking Steele has to "groove with it": turn it right back at them: remind them that if he's an Oreo, then he's Double Stuff: twice the man they are. . .
