The liberal George Soros-funded Web site MoveOn.org - proud sponsors of the failed 2004 John Kerry presidential campaign - has created a petition to be sent to the U.S. Senate opposing the confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito as associate justice of the Supreme Court.
The expressed goal of the drive is to collect at least 250,000 signatures on the petition, which expresses the sentiment: "The nomination of Samuel Alito poses a grave threat to the protections Americans count on, including basic workers rights, womens rights, and civil rights. We call on the Senate to stand up for all of us and reject the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States.
MoveOn, a federal political action committee (PAC), claims to have more than 3.3 million members across the U.S. and is basically "a family of organizations bringing real Americans back into the political process. The group expresses its primary mission as working to protect the Supreme Court from a "hard-right justice and to elect moderates and progressives in 2006.
We know them as liberals.
MoveOns anti-Alito campaign is reminiscent of its recent unsuccessful anti-John Roberts effort, where the organization maintained, "In nominating John Roberts, the President has turned to a right wing corporate lawyer and ideologue for the nations highest court. America cant afford a Supreme Court Justice - let alone a Chief Justice - with Roberts record of eroding the rights of workers and turning back the clock on civil rights.
Ultimately, MoveOn failed to have any impact on the Roberts confirmation, as he sailed through and is generally regarded as a "brilliant" selection.
In its current petition material on Alito, MoveOn says, "Bush's ploy to woo the far-right could reshape the High Court for decades to come - but we don't have to let that happen. The president's rock-bottom approval ratings and the scandals engulfing virtually every Republican leader have broken the spell of the right-wing spin machine. If we all speak up, together we have the power to stop this radical nominee.
"Only hours after the nomination, the battle lines are already clear. Leading progressive groups that specialize in protecting the Court (including People For the American Way and the Alliance for Justice) have already launched an emergency campaign to defeat Alito's nomination - a step they did not take with either John Roberts or Harriet Miers.
"The far-right, on the other hand, is thrilled. Organizations who vigorously opposed Harriet Miers for not being conservative enough are elated, and far-right leaders from Pat Robertson to Trent Lott are singing Alito's praise.
MoveOn compiles a list of "talking points" for Democrat politicians about reputed Alito shortcomings, including:
* As a judge on the Appeals Court, Alito issued a ruling to gut the Family and Medical Leave Act, which guarantees most workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a loved one in an emergency. The Supreme Court effectively overturned that ruling in 2003 - but if Alito were on the Supreme Court he would pose a grave threat to the basic rights of working families.
* In separate cases, Alito wrote dissenting opinions that would have made it essentially impossible to prove employment discrimination based on race or disability. He was overruled and harshly criticized by his colleagues, but if he were on the Supreme Court he could turn back the clock on decades of progress in securing civil rights for minorities and the disabled.
* Alito's judicial record and published views make him widely regarded as a sure vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. The extremist anti-abortion group Operation Rescue (who opposed Harriet Miers) responded to Alito's nomination by saying: "Roe's days are numbered ... We are trusting that we are now on the fast-track to derailing Roe v. Wade as the law of the land. If Alito were on the Supreme Court, reproductive freedom would be in serious jeopardy.
* In one significant case, Alito wrote a dissenting opinion that would have allowed an unauthorized strip search of a woman and her 10 year-old daughter, in their own home, without a warrant. Again, Alito was outvoted and strongly criticized by his fellow judges, but if he were to join Thomas and Scalia on the Supreme Court he would pose a grave threat to civil liberties and individual freedoms.
Perhaps the group's efforts will achieve the same fate as they did with Roberts.
"Reproductive freedom" means that leftist idiots are free to reproduce, it is not freedom to murder the innocent.
It is someone who values the Constitution versus the people who want the right to kill babies.
No wonder the left sees a threat.
He IS a threat, to all American hating, baby killing socialist/communist bastards in this country.
Since I work in IT, I always block emails from the moveon.org domain at the external inbound SMTP servers.
Just call me Mordac, Preventer of Information Services.
MUUUWAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!
My, my, there's a big surprise....
He could get no better endorsement.
These petitions crack me up. There is no verification as to identity so one person could be 20 sigs and so on. I like to reverse use them, that is, put my own comments in place. In this case comments supporting Aliton and urging my senators to ignore the hysteria MoveOn types. As if placating MoveOn would net them any benefit in any case. I always chuckle thinking about the e-mail from MoveOn advocating ignoring MoveOn screeching.
Meery Alitomas Moveon!!!!!
1) When is the last time moveon actually persued ANYTHING with success? We are quaking in our boots. George Soros should be made an honorary republican for hastening the collaspse of the Democrat party. He has done more than Karl Rove to aid our cause.
2) This Alito thing is a like a horn of plenty, a gift that keeps on giving. I can't believe Republicans went from low morale infighting, to being totally energized as they are today.
Between Soros and Dean I seriously doubt that we will have the Democrats to kick around for much longer.
They might as well start calling themselves the Socialist party and be done with it.
