Longtime CBS Evening News anchorman Dan Rather on Tuesday called for a return to independent journalism, telling viewers to be critical of the plethora of "new" media outlets that feign objectivity while working to advance their own - or another's - agenda.
"You need to ask yourself: Is more better, and is all that calls itself news really news," Rather told the estimated 1,400 people who filled the Maine Center for the Arts near capacity for his morning speech on the University of Maine campus. "News is something people need to know which someone, somewhere, doesn't want them to know. All the rest is advertising."

I can't believe 1,400 people actually showed up to listen to him blather. Well, it was a college campus in Maine. Also, remember that the press loves to exaggerate crowd size when reporting on their liberal buddies.

"News is something people need to know which someone, somewhere, doesn't want them to know. All the rest is advertising." No, Dan. News is a factual report of the day's events. Answering Who, What, When, Where, and How. Often when it gets around to reporting "why" (underlying root cause) there is bias editorializing introduced.
Too often the daily news looks like the faxed press release from the DNC. Dan, THAT is "advertising" on behalf of your chosen political party.
"Eye on America" stories that are long form "news magazine" pieces about one person's problems with their health provider or something ARE NOT NEWS.

Gale Weathers >>OK, she looks cute in the photo... Now who IS she?

"Gale Weathers" is the 'cheesy, tabloid newslady' played by Courteney Cox
in the Scream saga. Scream 3 opens with Weathers addressing a class
of journalism students because she is "hot" from her coverage of
the Woodsboro deaths. But even many students treat her like a joke . . .

Rather told the estimated 1,400 people who filled the Maine Center for the Arts near capacity for his morning speech on the University of Maine campus. "News is something people need to know which someone, somewhere, doesn't want them to know. Outing Mapes, Rather, and the other liars at CBS, by this definition, is NEWS. Capital "N" - News. They sure as hell didn't want anyone to see that they were lying to try to bring down a sitting President. It's "news" when puffed up jerks like Rather try to undermine the election processes in a free country with their elitist game playing.
Yep, we get it, Rather.
We were news all along and you were propaganda pushing lies. Right? Did I get it right CBS? Do I know "news" like the big boys now?

That is actually a pretty chilling statement. He believes that a "news" organization exists solely to find (or invent, as we have seen) conspiracies &c. There's no place in his bizarro "news" world for scientific discoveries, health warnings, etc., etc.
