BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — One of the key figures in Louisiana's response to Hurricane Katrina came under fire from state lawmakers, who questioned the time it took the national guard to reach disaster areas and the reason that supply trucks stocked with food and water never made it to storm victims.
The chief target of the questioning Tuesday was state Adjutant General Bennett Landreneau, director of the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness who is responsible for deploying the 14,000 members of the Louisiana National Guard.
"What we watched in this disaster has disturbed a lot of us," said Sen. Robert Adley, D-Benton, a member of a joint disaster recovery committee.
Sen. Walter Boasso, R-Arabi and co-chairman of the committee, said he begged for assistance but only had four Guard members providing help in St. Bernard Parish, which suffered massive damage after Katrina made landfall Aug. 29.
Boasso said his area had only 74 military-style meals, known as meals ready to eat, for 2,500 storm-beaten residents.
"What I was left with was hundreds of people sitting on the levee at night," he said. "No food. No water."
Landreneau said 40 guardsmen with vehicles able to navigate high waters were assigned to the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office.
"I didn't see it," Boasso replied.
Adley asked why as many as 900 18-wheelers that could have delivered food and water sat idly at Barksdale Air Force Base near Shreveport. He said he was told by guard officials that the Louisiana National Guard was responsible for moving those trucks, and he said that when he made inquiries the trucks were moved to Missouri and Chicago

Dems are laying the groundwork for another failur by saying that the states are strapped and can't afford to buy fl;u vaccine/ funny. I thought states were showing big surpluses.
