[Sacramento City] Council: Bring troops home
Sacramento Bee ^ | 11/2/5 | Phillip Reese

The Sacramento City Council called Tuesday night for the "rapid and comprehensive withdrawal of United States military personnel and bases from Iraq," citing the financial and human costs of the war on local resources.

The resolution, sponsored by council members Lauren Hammond and Ray Tretheway, puts Sacramento on a short but growing list of cities nationwide pressing for a quick withdrawal. Chicago's council recently approved a similar measure. San Francisco made the same call a year ago. And dozens of towns in Vermont have called for a withdrawal.

"When enough Congress members see there are enough cities throughout the United States saying it's time to bring our troops home, they will come up with a good exit strategy," Hammond said.

Councilman Robbie Waters, on the other hand, said the City Council had little business taking an official stance on an issue largely beyond its control.

"This is a matter best left to our elected officials in Washington, D.C.," Waters said.

The resolution, which passed 8-1 with Waters opposed, cited a number of reasons the United States should leave Iraq soon,

Naw, they're not even in the top-three silliest in California. San Francisco, Berkeley, and Santa Cruz would be my choices.

I just can't understand why cities waste time passing these resolutions. Do they think the Feds are going to say,'Oh,ok. Since you say to bring 'em home, then i guess we'd better do it!'

Amazing. They are telling the Fed Gov what to do when they can't even take care of their own business. You would think that they would put their oun house in order before passing edicts for others to follow.

I'm delighted that my city council has finally put their finger on the reason the crime rate in my little part of the Sacramenno Ghetto has more than tripled in the last year.

Who cares what Sacramento thinks about Iraq? It's not like they don't have plenty of their own problems to deal with.

I wasn't aware that Sacramento even HAD a military, and I wasn't aware that Sacramento was a member of the "coalition of the willing".

Why don't they pass a resolution for the terrorists to stop terrorizing?

Here is what I sent in response to all the Sacramento City Council members, with the exception of the only one among them that had the good sense to vote against this Vile anti-American action!

I would encourage as many as possible to write to all of these City of Sacramento Council Members and launch your disgust with them instead of just expressing it with only our fellow freepers. Send it where it may really count and let's FREEP them good, okay? You can find a list of their e-mails and phone numbers below:

Please, by all means send Robbie Waters a message commending him for standing in Support of our Brave Troops and voting against this lame resolution! e-mail him at: rwaters@cityofsacramento.org (916)808-7007

Dear Council Member,

I'm Thoroughly ASHAMED that you and your fellow Council Members took part in passing the resolution condemning our U.S. Military fighting in Operation Iraqi Freedom!! There are many of Our Troops, including our son (who is from the Sacramento Area) who are fighting there in Iraq for the Freedom of a people that have been held captive to a way of life that no human being should have to endure!! If our Brave Troops of Men and Women were not willing to volunteer to fight for the FREEDOM that YOU and I have come to enjoy, we would be no better off than to be held capitive under the likes of the Dictorship like that of Saddam himself. They are fighting for the Rights of you and I to remain FREE of Terrorism and fighting for the priviledge of others less fortunate to be able to live a life of FREEDOM and not to be crushed again by a Dictatorship that held them captive for years. You and your fellow Council Members have acted as a Demorat Dictatorship by passing something that my family most assuredly Does Not approve of!!! You certainly DO NOT Speak for us!!! In fact there are many, many people in the Sacramento area that DO NOT approve of of this Vile anti-American condemnation of our Brave Troops!

A decision of this order has nothing whatsoever to do with the business at hand for the City of Sacramento and you would do well to tend solely to the City of Sacramento Business. That's what you were elected to do and this is most assuredly a waste of the tax payers money and waste of time in doing something that is not what you are being paid to attend to!

You have clearly overstepped your bounds and defamed the City of Sacramento!!!

Your action in this matter will be not be forgotten on Election Day!!!

Proud Parents of a Soldier, Proudly Serving in Iraq,

SoldiersPrayingMom is highly upset at the Sacramento City Council's 8-1 vote to demand the recall of our soldiers from Iraq. Come to this link to see her letter she sent to each of those councilmembers who voted for this anti-American act.

Seems like people opposed to this were caught asleep. From another news article off of Google:

"According to Mayor Heather Fargo, 109 people filled out speaker cards supporting the resolution while only one person, Dave Jenest of "Patriot Watch," opposed the resolution. Over the past few weeks, Fargo said she had received 527 letters or phone calls for the resolution and only 19 in opposition. "
