New Abercrombie T-Shirts Spark Controversy

Abercrombie & Fitch is under fire again, this time for selling T-shirts that are causing some controversy, reported WEWS-TV in Cleveland.

The Columbus-based retailer is selling shirts marketed to teenage girls bearing slogans such as "Give me something to scream about," "I had a nightmare I was a brunette," and "I'd look great on you."

Some teens say that they don't see the shirts as a big deal, and they shouldn't be taken seriously.

Others say the shirts may be inappropriate for wearing to some places, such as school, and that wearing one may be sending a negative message about yourself.

Psychologist Deborah Plummer said the shirts can be mentally detrimental for teen girls, many of whom already struggle with self-image issues.

A group of girls in Pittsburgh is so upset by the T-shirts that they have decided to boycott the store completely.

Abercrombie & Fitch said in a statement the T-shirts have been very popular among adult women to whom they are marketed.

This is not the first time Abercrombie & Fitch has come under fire.

Two years ago, the retailer sparked controversy after its release of a "magalog" containing photos of nude and partially-clothed models.

The publication was pulled from the shelves.

And in 2004, Abercrombie & Fitch settled a lawsuit accusing the retailer of promoting whites at the expense of minorities.

Asian and Hispanic groups filed the lawsuit.

I allow my two teens (ages 18 and 19) to shop at Abercrombie. They like the fit of their jeans and buy the occasional shirt too. However, when out in public, they do not wear items of clothing that involve sexual innuendos or cuss words (bitch is a cuss word at our house) even if they're phrased hilariously. That's just the rule I've laid down and while I work to pay their college tuition, room, and board, they will abide by these rules.

That should explain why they call me Mother. ;-)

A fellow freeper found that site for me. I told her about my favorite helmet sticker I have, and they had it on a shirt.

I always say that the translation of any message on the seat of the pants is, "Look at my butt! It's the most interesting thing about me!"

And I'd give a prize to any guy who tapped a girl wearing pants that say "Cheer" on the behind, on the shoulder, and said, "Excuse me, miss, but it's my First Amendment right to Boo, if I want to."

I had, "Eat Sh!t and Die, MotherF**ker" and "Simon Says Go F**K Yourself" shirts.

Nice. A fellow Boston FReeper once told a story of getting disciplined in school for wearing a shirt that said "The word of the day is 'legs', spread the word."

>No freaking sense of humor

In a Star Trek film,
there's a funny line where Kirk
tells Chekov not to

try and stop something.
An alien blasts some thing,
and Chekov, shocked, says,

"Absolutely I won't get involved!"

or something like that.
At an SF convention
I got a tee shirt

that showed Chekov's quote.
Once, in an elevator,
some woman freaked out

and began screaming
at me, pointing at my shirt,
saying that message

defined what was wrong
with the modern world, no one
wants to get involved

everyone stands by
while evil grows and runs wild . . .
She went on and on.

When she finally left,
for a minute everyone
was silent and then

everyone just laughed
and I got a couple hugs
from other women

because it kind of
freaked me out getting yelled at
like that in public.

I've since developed
a thicker skin, but I still
marvel at how nuts

can be so devoid
of vestiges of humor.
Most Freepers LOVE laughs!

E entertainment had a show about FASHION DON'T'S. Watched alot by teenagers I would imagine. The #3 fashion don't is T-Shirts with stupid or nasty messsages...so I think they're starting to be frowned upon...you won't see them for much longer.

Where do they find these people? These girls must have too much time on their hands.

I saw a teenage skank at our local HS football game last week wearing a ballcap that proudly announced: "Just shut-up and do me".

Of course. If something's worth doing, it's worth doing right.
