In a Star Trek film,
there's a funny line where Kirk
tells Chekov not to
try and stop something.
An alien blasts some thing,
and Chekov, shocked, says,
"Absolutely I won't get involved!"
or something like that.
At an SF convention
I got a tee shirt
that showed Chekov's quote.
Once, in an elevator,
some woman freaked out
and began screaming
at me, pointing at my shirt,
saying that message
defined what was wrong
with the modern world, no one
wants to get involved
everyone stands by
while evil grows and runs wild . . .
She went on and on.
When she finally left,
for a minute everyone
was silent and then
everyone just laughed
and I got a couple hugs
from other women
because it kind of
freaked me out getting yelled at
like that in public.
I've since developed
a thicker skin, but I still
marvel at how nuts
can be so devoid
of vestiges of humor.
