Debate grows within agency about legality, morality of approach
The CIA has been hiding and interrogating some of its most important al Qaeda captives at a Soviet-era compound in Eastern Europe, according to U.S. and foreign officials familiar with the arrangement.
The secret facility is part of a covert prison system set up by the CIA nearly four years ago that at various times has included sites in eight countries, including Thailand, Afghanistan and several democracies in Eastern Europe, as well as a small center at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, according to current and former intelligence officials and diplomats from three continents.
The hidden global internment network is a central element in the CIA's unconventional war on terrorism. It depends on the cooperation of foreign intelligence services, and on keeping even basic information about the system secret from the public, foreign officials and nearly all members of Congress charged with overseeing the CIA's covert actions.
The existence and locations of the facilities -- referred to as "black sites" in classified White House, CIA, Justice Department and congressional documents -- are known to only a handful of officials in the United States and, usually, only to the president and a few top intelligence officers in each host country.
But the revelations of widespread prisoner abuse in Afghanistan and Iraq by the U.S. military -- which operates under published rules and transparent oversight of Congress -- have increased concern among lawmakers, foreign governments and human rights groups about the opaque CIA system.

Someone tell me how this is different from outing the Democrat Plame? It's NOT. But if the media is outing anyone, it's Freedom of the Press.
Plame already outted herself by having her photo made when she gave money to the Democrats.
Politics should be 'off limits' for CIA, FBI, and local law enforcement.
Period.
Disband the CIA. Move it's functionality to Army Intelligence, or better yet, start a new organization. The current CIA is riddled with commie traitors.
Someone tell me how this is different from outing the Democrat Plame? It's NOT.It's treason.
Good!
Is there a cell reserved for Michael Moore?
If not, why not?
"You should take a peek over at DU or KOS... oh how they claim the moral high ground..what a bunch of two faced liars."
Not unless I could take a bath after reading such crap. And they want to ACT morally superior? Now that's a joke - considering they're the party who loves to kill babies.
The previous story was that secret detainees were being held in Navy ships at sea.
These stories change so dramatically and so quickly.
Exactly. Most Americans (as you say, real Americans) will be pleased to know we've got the worst of the worst in secret prisons around the world, and they won't want these prisoners to be coddled, either.
"I don't see how this hurts Bush. Sure, the screeching left will screech, but the real Americans don't care."
And if they do care, I'll bet the majority of those Americans will be disgusted with the CIA and whomever is doing the leaking. If they can't keep something like THIS a secret, then the CIA is WORTHLESS.
The problem I see is that our COMMIE RAT Senators get to sit in on intelligence oversight meetings and then help leak this stuff.
And where are the MSM demands that Fitzgerald find out who's leaking?!
Have I told y'all lately how much I hate the MediaCrats?
Such a secret that I have been reading the same recycled article for three years now.
Oh biy, where to start? Where is the investigation of all THIS leaking. Plamegate is nothing compared to the damage this information being made public is. The Rats and their media buddies are going to get people killed.
Isn't publishing this information far more damaging than the revealing of the name of a person who MAY have been a covert agent years ago for the CIA? Where may we get a little perspective on the relative importance of the two situations?
This sounds like a very serious leak of information by either a US Senator or one of the staff (if not someone within the CIA itself), and a serious compromise of the ability of the CIA to carry out its mission.
It is / was a great majority of the CIA - Though Mr. Goss is doing what he can to reduce those numbers. Outside of the SAD of the CIA, 85% + is useless and or dangerous because it (CIA) has become political in the past decade.
