CIA holds terror suspects in secret prisons

Debate grows within agency about legality, morality of approach

The CIA has been hiding and interrogating some of its most important al Qaeda captives at a Soviet-era compound in Eastern Europe, according to U.S. and foreign officials familiar with the arrangement.

The secret facility is part of a covert prison system set up by the CIA nearly four years ago that at various times has included sites in eight countries, including Thailand, Afghanistan and several democracies in Eastern Europe, as well as a small center at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, according to current and former intelligence officials and diplomats from three continents.

The hidden global internment network is a central element in the CIA's unconventional war on terrorism. It depends on the cooperation of foreign intelligence services, and on keeping even basic information about the system secret from the public, foreign officials and nearly all members of Congress charged with overseeing the CIA's covert actions.

The existence and locations of the facilities -- referred to as "black sites" in classified White House, CIA, Justice Department and congressional documents -- are known to only a handful of officials in the United States and, usually, only to the president and a few top intelligence officers in each host country.

But the revelations of widespread prisoner abuse in Afghanistan and Iraq by the U.S. military -- which operates under published rules and transparent oversight of Congress -- have increased concern among lawmakers, foreign governments and human rights groups about the opaque CIA system.

"Would I run a page one story on Dec. 5, 1944 that the allies are invading Normandy tomorrow?"

Besides being incorrect about the D-Day date (JUNE 6, 1944) the Poster reveals himself to be badly misinformed and naive about the fundamentals of War. If he thinks WWII was in some way a 'Clean' War, warranting his cooperation and approval because of this impression, he is way out to lunch. WWII (And every other War) was a War and inherently unclean. That is the fundamental characteristic of all Wars. The impression that rules and regulations can somehow cleanse War and thereby make it acceptable is a dangerous delusion.

If this War is less 'Clean' the WWII, it is because of the nature of the enemy we are fighting, not as the poster implies, because of the US's actions.

What a maroon!

LOL (have to otherwise I would cry.)

What is wrong with this title, "CIA holds terror suspects in secret prisons"?

Can't figure out what is secret if it's in the newspaper. I really think the CIA needs to be disbanded. Sheesh we're spending billions of dollars on an agency that hires blond bimbos who tell their lovers that they are spies. We have an agency that has no idea who Niger is selling their yellowcake to. We have an agency who allows a third rate former Ambassador to "collect" yellowcake information over tea and then does not file a written report and THEN brazenly lies about the trip in a partisan newspaper that is read the world over and then whines that the his wife who works for the CIA and who recommended him for the job is "outed". This couple then poses for the cover of a silly elitist society magazine called Vanity Fair.

And now the "secret" prisons are all over another newspaper. Well that's serving the public well, a secret service that can't keep secrets. I want my darn money back.

If 'twas so, there never should have been the Nuremberg Trials.

As long as Haliburton got the contract to build the prisons it's OK by me!

Halliburton didn't; they recycled some old concrete.

IMO The Nuremberg Trials were as much a political statement as a bona fide trial. They were conducted by the victors against the losers but, in fact, very few War atrocities were ever prosecuted or even followed up on by either side.

I can almost guarantee that had the Nazi's won, summary execution would have ensued and those convicted at Nuremberg would have been awarded the Iron Cross.

I would bet anything that Rockefeller is behind this "leak" to grab more impetus for his "Phase 2" intelligence investigation

BUMP what you said.
Most Americans couldn't care less about "terror suspects" or what kind of prison they're in or what kind of torture they're enduring (panties on the head, for example). As Dan Rather would say, FEA.

We already had an idea that this is what was happening. No reason for them to publish it. We want terrorists locked away. Then again, it will be nice to see the pro-terrorist libs having panic attacks :)

Well, it's nice to see the CIA morphing back into it's old, evil self, in the eyes of the left and MSM. :)

Every time they caught one of the higher-ups - they got whisked away - never to be seen again.

Torture? The MSM has consistently spread the story that torture is of no use.....so I'm sure the CIA is also aware of this fact - don't ya think? [wink]

When did the CIA become anti-American?

The top 30 al Qaeda prisoners exist in complete isolation from the outside world. Kept in dark, sometimes underground cells, they have no recognized legal rights, and no one outside the CIA is allowed to talk with or even see them, or to otherwise verify their well-being, said current and former and U.S. and foreign government and intelligence officials.

Liberal weenies make me want to puke.

In cells right next to the aliens captured when their spaceships crashed! I read it in the supermarket tabloids ... so it must be true!
