For the freedom you enjoyed yesterday...
Thank the Veterans who served in
The United States Armed Forces.

Looking forward to tomorrow's freedom?

Welcome Troops, Veterans, Military Families, Allies, and FRiends!

Born on this Day
1795 James Knox Polk, Democrat U.S. President (1845-49);
born in North Carolina, Polk lived most of his life and rose through the political ranks representing the state of Tennessee; to date, he is the only former Speaker of the House to become president

1865 Warren Gamaliel Harding, Republican U.S. President (1921-23);
an Ohio-bred politician and former influential newspaper publisher with a flair for public speaking; Harding succumbed to either a stroke or heart disease 27 months into his term, making him the sixth president to die in office

Born on this Day

1913 actor Burt Lancaster; born in New York City, Lancaster was a skilled gymnast and worked for a brief time as a circus acrobat; during WWII, he joined the U.S. Army and performed with the USO; he won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for his performance in Elmer Gantry, but he is best known for the steamy beach scene with Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity

Happy Birthday

1938 Patrick Buchanan; born in Washington, D.C., Buchanan is an author, syndicated columnist, television commentator, and former presidential hopeful having twice sought the Republican nomination (1992 and 1996) and once running as the Reform Party candidate (2000); he served as an advisor and speechwriter in the Nixon administration and as the communications director in the Reagan White House (last Wednesday was the anniversary of the famous shootout at the OK Corral)

On this Day in History
1948 Truman defeated Dewey: in the greatest upset in presidential election history, Democratic incumbent Harry S. Truman defeated his Republican challenger, Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York, by just over two million popular votes; on election night, long before all the votes were counted, the over-confident Chicago Daily Tribune published an early edition with the banner headline "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN." In the weeks and days leading up to the election, political analysts and polls indicated that Truman, regarded by some to be an ineffectual shadow of his four-term predecessor FDR, would lose the White House to Dewey

On this Day in History
1947 The Spruce Goose took flight; piloted by designer Howard Hughes on its first and only flight, the massive wooden aircraft had a wingspan longer than a football field

Following the U.S. entrance into World War II in 1941, the U.S. government commissioned the Hughes Aircraft Company to build a large flying boat capable of carrying men and materials over long distances. Because of wartime restrictions on steel, Hughes decided to build his aircraft out of wood laminated with plastic and covered with fabric. Although it was constructed mainly of birch, the use of spruce (along with its white-gray color) would later earn the aircraft the nickname Spruce Goose.

Development of the Spruce Goose cost a phenomenal $23 million and took so long that the war had ended by the time of its completion in 1946. The aircraft had many detractors, and Congress demanded that Hughes prove the plane airworthy. Hughes obliged, taking the H-4 prototype out into Long Beach Harbor for a flight test. He lifted his wooden behemoth 70 feet above the water and flew for a mile before landing.

Despite its successful maiden flight, the Spruce Goose never went into production, primarily because critics alleged that its wooden framework was insufficient to support its weight during long flights. From 1947 until his death in 1976, Hughes kept the Spruce Goose prototype ready for flight in an enormous, climate-controlled hangar at a cost of $1 million per year. Today, the Spruce Goose is housed at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. (follow the link above to visit online)
