SADDAM AIDES LEAD INSURGENCY AS ISLAMISTS

LONDON [MENL] -- Aides of deposed President Saddam Hussein,
under the guise of Al Qaida fighters, have been leading the insurgency
against the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.
Islamic sources said many of the Al Qaida-aligned cells that have
appeared over the last two years stemmed from units in the Saddam
military. The sources said Baathist operatives have adopted Islamic
identities to exploit support among Muslims for Al Qaida.
The Baathist strategy was formed during Saddam's rule, the sources
said. They pointed to the "Return to Faith Campaign" directed by
then-Iraqi Vice President Izzat Ibrahim Al Douri, which sought to curry
favor from Islamic fundamentalists in Iraq and the Gulf. Earlier this
month, Saddam supporters claimed Al Douri died.
In October 2005, a leading Al Qaida-aligned web forum, Al Farouq
[www.al-farouq.com] posted an article that detailed the
transformation of Saddam units into Al Qaida-aligned cells. The
article, signed "The Degenerate, Base Salafist," asserted that Saddam
aides were able to conduct mass-casualty strikes against Iraqis under
the banner of Islam.

Jerusalem apartment building fire bombed

Twelve firebombs were hurled at a Jerusalem apartment building
Saturday night, lightly damaging the building, police said.
There were no injuries reported in the 8:45 p.m. attack on the
building, located in the city's outlying Reches Shuafat neighborhood.
The suspected Arab assailants fled the scene.

More demands and tirades are issued forth from the unobstructed
mouth of Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. From The
Scotsman:
Iran's hard-line president has called for the Bush administration to be
tried on war crimes charges related to Iraq and denounced the West
for its stance on Iran's controversial nuclear programme.
"You, who have used nuclear weapons against innocent people, who
have used uranium ordnance in Iraq should be tried as war criminals
in courts," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in an apparent reference to
the US.
"Who in the world are you to accuse Iran of suspicious nuclear armed
activity?" asked the Iranian president during a nationally televised
ceremony marking the 36th anniversary of the establishment of the
volunteer Basij paramilitary force.
Speaking of the Basij, Reuters reports,
Thousands of members of Iran’s volunteer militia, the basij, paraded
and formed human chains in Iranian cities on Saturday as a show of
force against international pressure on Iran’s atomic programme.
In Teheran, some 3,000 basij, clutching automatic rifles and wearing
chequered headscarves, paraded before President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad and chanted “God is the Greatest”.
Ahmadinejad told them their militia spirit would help thwart foreign
powers in an international dispute over Iran’s atomic ambitions.
“Of course the (foreign powers) get angry when they see the power
and spirit of the militia now governs our international policy,
diplomatic relations and negotiations,” the president said. “In reply to
their anger say: Go ahead, be angry but Die in your anger.”

- Jordan: Abu Musab al-Zarqawi 18 Nov.: "We do not forget to caution our Muslim brothers in Jordan to stay away from the following places: First, the military bases and airports at which the US and British forces are present, be they inside or outside cities. Second, tourist hotels in Amman, the Dead Sea, Aqaba, Petra, Jarash, and other areas that are frequented by the Jews and Crusaders. Third, all the embassies and consulates of governments that took part in the war on Iraq."
- Indonesia: US Embassy on 18 Nov.: "The bombs and other materials in the Azahari safe house and the information on the website make it clear that terrorists in Indonesia are likely changing their tactics to include targeting of individual western citizens."
- Indonesia: US Embassy on 18 Nov.: "The information obtained in the Nov. 9 raid in which Indonesian police killed JI terrorist Azahari Bin Husin shows that JI-affiliated terrorists were in the advanced stages of planning additional attacks against westerners in Indonesia. ... The Embassy further informs Americans that a recently discovered Internet website provides detailed instructions on how terrorists can attack and kill individual Westerners on the streets of Jakarta. The website, written in Indonesian, specifically mentions two locations known to be frequented by many Western pedestrians, namely the area between the JW Marriott Hotel and Ambassador Mall, and the pedestrian overpass on Jl. Rasuna Said near the Australian Embassy and Setiabudi shopping complex. The website mentions specifically the Senayan golf driving range, the zoo, Taman Safari animal park, Ancol beach, Planet Hollywood, and the Jakarta Convention Center, and refers in general to hotels, sports centers and exhibition halls."
