FEMA Pulls Out of Lower Ninth (New Orleans) Agency Calls for Troops
washington post ^ | 12/3/05 | Spencer S. Hsu
Posted on 12/03/2005 3:00:13 AM PST by Timeout
The Federal Emergency Management Agency pulled all its workers out of New Orleans's Lower Ninth Ward yesterday after threats of violence and planned to request additional police or National Guard support, a FEMA spokeswoman said.
A spokeswoman for Mayor C. Ray Nagin said the police commander for the district knew of no incidents or threat complaints. ...
One relief worker in the region said an angry resident berated a Corps of Engineers employee before delivering a threat to the effect of "I'm going to go get my gun, and I'm going to kill you." Federal agents have arrested six people in the New Orleans area in recent weeks for making threats against FEMA workers, who have been advised against wearing clothing with the agency logo in public.

Humberto Garcia claimed that his daughter, Jenny Garcia Hayden, might be alive if police had reported her killer to immigration authorities after his illegal status was purportedly discovered during an unrelated investigation before the murder."
"Austin officials deny any wrongdoing. They say their policy, based on a 1997 city resolution, is aimed merely at ensuring that city employees do not discriminate against illegal immigrants."

Triangle of death: Philanthropist island crash fourth this year
Boston Herald ^ | December 3, 2005 | Casey Ross
Posted on 12/03/2005 5:00:37 AM PST by billorites
A prominent New York philanthropist whose family built the Harvard School of Business is presumed dead in frigid waters off Nantucket after his private plane disappeared from radar and was not found during a frantic 19-hour search, authorities said.
George Baker III, 66, was flying to meet his wife at their Nantucket home Thursday evening when air traffic controllers lost contact with his plane about 2 1/2 miles from the islands landing strip.
Baker is the latest victim of several mysterious crashes in and around Cape Cod and the Islands in recent years. Three other small planes have crashed in the region this year alone.
U.S. Coast Guard officials called off their search for Baker about 1:10 p.m. yesterday after finding no sign of him or his plane.
Baker was a remarkable man and this is a great tragedy, said Donella Rapier, vice president of alumni affairs and development for Harvard University. He was very generous with his time and his advice. This is very sad news.
Nantucket police found a First Aid kit, a bottle of aviation lubricant and a couple pieces of plastic near Nobadeer Beach, but no other debris was immediately discovered. Police planned to resume their search today.
Baker, whose great-grandfather donated $5 million to help build the Harvard School of Business in 1924, was retired from a New York investment firm he co-founded and was working as senior trustee for the George F. Baker Trust.
Bakers family was gathered at their Nantucket home yesterday while Coast Guard officials continued a fruitless search off the islands southern coast. A man who identified himself as Bakers son said the family did not wish to comment.
A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said Baker, who had nearly 40 years experience as a pilot, was flying at 200 feet about 2miles from the airport when contact with his airplane was lost. There were no severe weather problems reported in the area and Baker never indicated he was in distress.
News of Bakers apparent death yesterday devastated friends and academic associates at Harvard University, where a library and the the graduate school of business administration are named after his great-grandfather, who founded the First National Bank of New York that would become a cornerstone of Citibank.
He was a very generous donor and a good friend of the business school and of the last three deans, Harvard spokesman Jim Aisner said.
Iran, on defiant course, tunes up military
Sat. 3 Dec 2005
Tehran, Iran, Dec. 03 Irans Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered a major reshuffle of the top brass of the armed forces as part of a larger plan to enhance the militarys control over the government, Iran Focus has learnt.
In recent weeks, hundreds of senior officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) have been seconded to government ministries and state institutions to prop up the countrys civil administration for what many within the clerical government believe will be a very tough year ahead for the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Iran Focus revealed last week that three in four of the new senior political appointees by hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad come from the Revolutionary Guards, including 11 of his ministers and several new governors.
As part of the new changes, Brigadier General Mohammad Hejazi will soon leave his command of the para-military Bassij and move to the more senior position of Chairman of the IRGCs Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to informed sources in Tehran.
Hejazi is a close ally of President Ahmadinejad, who has himself been a top commander in the IRGC.
The decision to give Hejazi the top job comes after IRGC Deputy Commandant Brigadier General Mohammad-Baqer Zolqadr was appointed as the Deputy Interior Minister. Zolqadr will coordinate the motley internal security organisations of the Islamic fundamentalist state.

ALLAH OR JESUS
The cumulative effects of Islamist recruitment in the U.S. penal system are as stunning as they are ominous. Currently, there are said to be roughly 350,000 inmates in federal, state and local prisons who identify themselves Muslims. Some 30,000-40,000 more are being added to that population each year. One year ago, prisoners at the New Folsom State Prison a maximum-security facility outside Sacramento, California reportedly began plotting terrorist attacks against three National Guard facilities, the Israeli consulate and several synagogues in the Los Angeles area. The attacks are believed to have been planned for the fourth anniversary of September 11th or the Jewish holidays.
According to ABC News, a law enforcement report has determined that the plotters intended to kill everyone at the target[s], potentially resulting in dozens of casualties inflicted on innocents as part of the jihad (holy war) the prisoners were determined to wage against the United States.
The frightening thing is that the would-be assailants were not terrorist adherents to the political ideology of Islamofascism when they went to jail. They became Islamists while in prison thanks to the sort of recruitment opportunities afforded clerics usually selected by Saudi-backed Muslim-American organizations. Today, they are reportedly members of a prison gang called Jamat Ul-Islam Is Saheeh.

Win contest, fire missiles at U.S. base
Intelligence Summit 2006 ^

Information bureau of Sunni terrorist organization operating in Iraq announces website designers contest. First prize: Opportunity to fire three long-range missiles from any location in the world at U.S. army base in Iraq
Announcements posted on the Islamist Internet forums are usually connected to ongoing terrorist activities, such as claims of responsibility for attacks, recorded speeches by leaders, etc. Occasionally, there are also announcements of a propagandist nature that are difficult to attribute with any certainty to specific terrorist organizations, and whose authenticity is hard to establish, such as the "oath of loyalty to bin Laden" initiative.
However, a new announcement published in one of the Islamic websites was particularly creative.
A special document published by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) presents an announcement published by the information bureau of Jaish Al-Taifa Al-Mansura ("The Army of the Victorious Group"), a Sunni terrorist organization operating in Iraq.
Online Terror
Pledging allegiance to Bin Laden online / Roee Nahmias Islamic Internet forums publish declaration on opening month-long signing of oath of loyalty to Bin Laden, al-Qaeda elite on Internet
The organization announced a contest for designing its website, and stated that the prize would be, in addition to reward from Allah, an opportunity to fire missiles via computer at a U.S. army base in Iraq.
The following are excerpts from the announcement:
"To the brothers who seek reward (from Allah) and to the honorable people (who visit) the forums of the blessed Al-Hesbah network and of the Global Islamic Media Front:
"The information bureau of the Army of the Victorious Group has announced a contest for designing and constructing a special website for the Army.
"The site must include the motto of the Army of the Victorious Group, the Army's ideology, as posted on the Al-Hesbah network, and the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad about the victorious group, communiqués issued by the Army that have been posted on the Al-Hesbah network, and videos of the Army's operations that have been posted on the Al-Hesbah network.
"In addition, the site must include all materials connected to the Army that have appeared on Al-Hesbah, in newspapers or elsewhere. (The site) must match the good reputation of the Army, of jihad and of the jihad fighters, and (it must) defeat the Crusader information (channels)."
'Winner will fire three long-range missiles'
Surprisingly, this is not a normal bid. According to the announcement, "the contest will continue for a month, and there will be two prizes for the best design."
The first prize is "a reward from Allah for blessed work in the service of jihad and the jihad fighters." As a second reward, "the winner will fire three long-range missiles from any location in the world at an American army base in Iraq, by pressing a button (on his computer) with his own blessed hand, using technology developed by the jihad fighters, Allah willing."
According to the announcement, the geographical distance should not prevent anyone from taking part in the contest.
"This is also an opportunity for our brothers outside Iraq to join their brothers on the front line in Iraq, the land of the frontier and of jihad, and to (participate in) destroying the strongholds of polytheism and heresy," the announcement said.

Border inspector finds bloody medical refuse
SANTA TERESA -- The 18-wheeler was supposed to be importing scraps of fabric and plastic headed for a New Mexico landfill.
Instead, it carried oozing medical waste.
The bales weighed 1,200 to 1,500 pounds, but it was impossible to know how much of the medical waste was mingled with the pieces of fabrics and festive candy-cane plastic bags.
A quick overview found blood-stained gauze and a bag of unidentified, yellowish body fluids, squeezed among the cargo. A mystery blue liquid leaked from a package.

The shipment came from Mexico, but officials declined to name the importer and the shipper, because they committed a civil, not a criminal, violation.

Thanks Granny.
I missed that one.
This is really getting scary, and no, I don't think I am being an alarmist. China, with their closed society, is not reporting all their Avian flu cases. Romania and, now, the Ukraine are reporting cases. When Mr. RR returns from there next week, I am putting him in isolation for two weeks. (just kidding, but I am tempted.)
We have about 60 to 100 wild turkeys that wander through our property a couple times a day. I used to feed them cracked corn when it got as cold and snowy as it is here right now. Poor things will have to fend for themselves. I will no longer do anything to encourage their visits.
Snip: When the 41-year-old Lake Oswego resident recovered his stolen pickup recently, he found the interior littered with the culprits personal paraphernalia: burglary tools, stolen mail, newspaper classifieds, stolen compact disc players, a cell phone and dozens of cigarette butts. The kicker was a torn piece of letterhead from Multnomah County that suggested the thief was out on probation for a drug crime.
Carter, an environmental engineer, took the evidence to the Portland Police Bureaus East Precinct, in whose jurisdiction his car was found, in hopes that officers would help find and prosecute the thief. I told the police they could probably piece it together, he says. Theres probably 2 billion fingerprints all over this. He was astounded to have a police sergeant tell him that no matter how much evidence he had, his case probably would never see the light of day.
Who killed Babichenko and what's his connection to Portland's Russian auto-theft ring?
Snip: Vancouver, Wash.'s eighth homicide of 1997 was also its strangest. On Halloween morning, Oleg Babichenko left home in his Toyota station wagon. Within minutes, his car exploded, and Babichenko, an immigrant from the former Soviet Union, was dead, the first death by explosion in Vancouver history.
"This is probably one of the most difficult cases I've ever been involved with," says Vancouver Police Det. Scott Creager, who is in charge of the investigation. He suspects Babichenko once may have been in the stolen-car business.
If Creager's suspicions are right, Portlanders have something to worry about. For the past few years, Portland police believe, Russian-speaking immigrants have established organized rings responsible for some of the city's high-end auto theft. The problem has become so bad that last week the Portland Police Bureau announced it was forming a six-person unit strictly to battle these Eastern European thieves. "In other cities--places like Brooklyn, Toronto, San Diego and even Bellevue, Wash.--what started out as property crime by Russian-speaking criminals eventually led to violence.
