The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
What's become of bin Laden since he gave us all the slip?
Full Story

Some think he is dead, others that he is hiding because he is scared of being killed.

Whatever the reason for the strange disappearance of Osama bin Laden, not seen alive since his last mocking video statement a year ago, he is no longer the face of the global "jihad" against the West.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi { TM 25,TM 27 }, the Jordanian responsible for some of the worst atrocities in Iraq, has become the hero of the hour on militant Islamist websites.

Gangsters close diamond exhibition
Posted on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 10:41am
The world's biggest exhibition of priceless diamonds has been forced to
close after police uncovered a plot to steal the jewels. The display, which
has attracted more than 70,000 visitors since it opened in at the Natural
History Museum in London in July, was closed with immediate effect on
Wednesday -- three months earlier than planned. Scotland Yard said it
had received intelligence that a criminal gang was planning to target the
exhibition.

Russia beset by foreign spies: official
Posted on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 11:55am
Foreign espionage is on the increase in Russia and foreigners are not
taking Moscow's "war on terrorism" seriously, the head of the FSB state
security service was quoted as saying on Thursday. Nikolai Patrushev's
comments suggesting encirclement by Russia's enemies coincided with
broader moves against foreign organizations in Russia. Parliament gave
outline approval on Wednesday to a bill that will limit the right of
non-governmental groups (NGOs) to employ non-Russians or receive
foreign funding.

Who is funding the terrorist? Who made them wealthy? (Hint, those who buy petrol sold by the Saudi family)

Fascinating article from der Spiegel about the Saudi elite, Bin Laden family, and the documented story of al-Qaida
Excerpted:

MEET THE BIN LADENS

Osama's Road to Riches and Terror
By Georg Mascolo and Erich Follath

The Bin Laden family disowned black sheep Osama in 1994. But have they really broken with the mega-terrorist? Recently revealed classified documents seem to suggest otherwise.

Osama's violent career has been made possible in part by the generosity of his family -- and by his contacts with the Saudi royals.
---
Vincent Cannistraro, former head of counterterrorism for the CIA, says, "I tracked the bin Ladens for years. Many family members claimed that Osama was no longer one of them. It's an easy thing to say, but blood is usually thicker than water."

Carmen bin Laden, a sister-in-law of the terrorist, who lived with the extended family in Jeddah for years, says,

"I absolutely do not believe that the bin Ladens disowned Osama. In this family, a brother is always a brother, no matter what he has done. I am convinced that the complex and tightly woven network between the bin Laden clan and the Saudi royal family is still in operation."

French documentary filmmaker Joël Soler even goes so far as to refer to the family as "A Dynasty of Terror," in his somewhat speculative made-for-TV piece.

But could this really be possible? Are the bin Ladens (or "Binladins," as they more commonly spell it), with their 25 brothers, 29 sisters, in-laws, aunts and, by now, at least 15 children of Osama, nothing but a clan of terrorists?

American celebrity attorney Ron Motley plans to file a lawsuit against alleged Saudi backers of al-Qaida on behalf of hundreds of families who lost relatives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
---
Jeddah is the place where the clan's founding father began his astonishing career. And it's also the place where the first family member became connected with Islamic terrorism -- not Osama, but his older brother, Mahrus bin Laden.

US authorities have also clearly linked another member of the clan, Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, who is married to one of Osama's sisters, to terrorist attacks abroad.(continued..)

Peru Assigns Police to Protect Tourists
Posted on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 12:06pm
Police will begin patrolling Peru's famed Inca Trail following the recent
armed robbery of 13 tourists, officials said Wednesday. Peru's National
Institute of Culture, which administers the trail and the Machu Picchu
ruins — the country's top tourist destination — said national police would
assign 12 officers to protect hikers. "This number could increase in the
future," said institute spokeswoman Ana Palomino in Cuzco, the ancient
capital of the Inca empire 350 miles southeast of Lima. She said agents
assigned to the trail will be required to speak a foreign language and will
focus on guarding campsites.

In 1990, after his triumph in Afghanistan, OBL offered the Saudi royal family the use of his troops to battle Saddam Hussein, whose forces had invaded Kuwait. But King Fahd decided instead to bring in American forces.

The decision proved to be a financial coup for the family business, which helped build military bases for the outsiders, but it was turning point in Osama's life.

Embittered, he went to Sudan in 1992, where he built training camps and organized attacks with his al-Qaida group, especially against "infidels" from the United States.

He also made sure that the planning of terrorist activities remained in the family.

Iraq army seizes booby-trapped toy dolls
Posted on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 12:32pm
The Iraqi army said it had seized a number of booby-trapped children's
dolls, accusing insurgents of using the explosive-filled toys to target
children. The dolls were found in a car, each one containing a grenade or
other explosive, said an army statement. The government said that two
men driving the car had been arrested in the western Baghdad district of
Abu Ghraib. "This is the same type of doll as that handed out on several
occasions by US soldiers to children," said government spokesman Leith
Kubba.

Continued, excerpted:

According to Scheuer, members of the bin Ladin family who were doing business in the United States or studying at US universities were almost completely inaccessible.

"My counterparts at the FBI questioned one of the bin Ladens," the former CIA agent recalls. "But then the State Department received a complaint from a law firm, and there was a huge uproar.

We were shocked to find out that the bin Ladens in the United States had diplomatic passports, and that we weren't allowed to talk to them."
---
Scheuer believes that these diplomatic privileges also helped the bin Ladens get out of the United States quickly after September 11, in a bizarre episode that has even been probed by the US Congress and an investigative commission.

Only two days after the attacks, when the US government had just reopened US air space, charter jets began taking off from various cities. Nine pilots flew 142 Saudi Arabians back to the kingdom.

On Sept. 20, 2001, the "bin Laden jet" took off from St. Louis, making stops in Los Angeles, Orlando, Washington and Boston. At each stop, the plane picked up more half-brothers, nephews, nieces and cousins of public enemy number one.

At that point, the FBI had already begun investigating two of the bin Ladens who were flown out of the country. They both lived in Falls Church, a suburb of Washington, and were officials in the "World Assembly of Muslim Youth."

Richard Clarke, for many years the chief of counterterrorism at the White House, has revealed that he was responsible for the flights.

EU Accuses Iran of Having Nuke Documents
Posted on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 12:36pm
The European Union accused Iran on Thursday of having documents that
serve no other purpose than showing how to produce nuclear warheads.
It and the United States warned of U.N. Security Council action, even
while Iran suggested it was considering a compromise meant to reduce
tensions. Britain, in a statement on behalf of the European Union,
offered new negotiations meant to lessen concerns over Tehran's
insistence that it must be in full control of uranium enrichment — a
possible pathway to nuclear arms.

China, HK hotels threatened with terror
attacks

Press Trust of India

Islamabad, November 24, 2005|12:49 IST

Pakistan is investigating an anonymous
threat to carry out militant attacks against
hotels in Hong Kong and China, foreign
ministry and security officials has said.

The warning was carried in a letter faxed
to the Chinese consulate general in
Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, three
weeks ago, the officials said yesterday.

"It mentioned possible attacks in Hong
Kong" but not in Pakistan, foreign ministry
spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam told AFP.

A senior security official told AFP the
communication also threatened hotels in
China. The threat carried the name of the
a person who identified himself as Ali
Rizvi, the official said.

"The investigation so far has yielded no trace of the person mentioned
in the letter. We are still seeking to determine whether the threat is a
hoax or something serious," the official said on condition of anonymity.

He said authorities have not been able to trace the telephone number
the fax was sent from. "There is no record for this Ali Rizvi with us. We
have also checked all immigration records as well," the official added.

The threat comes nearly three months after France's top
counter-terrorism investigator said Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda
network was preparing an attack on a big financial centre in Asia to
undermine investor confidence in the region.

Neighbouring Pakistan and China are close allies but both have
problems with Islamic militancy. Islamabad is cracking down on
Al-Qaeda-linked rebels and Beijing is tackling Muslim separatists in
northwestern Xinjiang province.
