Dutchman 'sold chemicals to Saddam'
November 23, 2005
THE HAGUE: A Dutch businessman sold chemicals to Iraq knowing Saddam Hussein would use them to carry out poison gas attacks that killed thousands of people, prosecutors said during the first day of his trial.
Frans van Anraat, 63, is charged with complicity in war crimes and genocide for supplying agents for poison gas used by Iraq in the 1980 to 1988 war with Iran and against its Kurdish population, including a 1988 attack on the town of Halabja.
Van Anraat admits supplying the chemicals but denies knowing that they were destined for Iraq and would be used to produce poison gas.
"He is being accused of delivering raw materials necessary to build Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons. The use of those weapons by the regime in Baghdad led to the death of thousands in Iraq and Iran," prosecutor Fred Teeven told the court.
"He is complicit in serious international crimes."
Prosecutors accuse the Dutchman of shipping chemicals from the US to Belgium and from there to Iraq via Jordan, and from Japan to Baghdad through Italy.
A key witness statement read out in court suggested he discussed with a Japanese business partner how best to describe the use of the chemicals for something other than weapons, but van Anraat contested the statement. The court was packed with relatives of Halabja victims and members of Kurdish groups.
A small group outside the Hague court displayed photographs of Kurdish victims of chemical weapons and held a red banner reading: "Genocide Never Again." The Halabja attack on March 16, 1988, killed an estimated 5000 people.
"I hope he gets a life sentence," said Amir Gadir of Victims of Genocide Against Kurds in Halabja. But one of van Anraat's lawyers, Ruud Gijsen, said outside the court: "Van Anraat did not know about the intended use of the raw materials and did not know what their final destination was."
UN weapons inspectors have said van Anraat was an important middleman supplying Iraq with chemical agents.
The first Dutchman to be tried on genocide-related charges, van Anraat faces up to life in prison if convicted. The trial, for which statements were taken from about 100 witnesses, is expected to last about three weeks. A verdict is due on December 23.
Van Anraat was arrested by Dutch officials last December as he was preparing to leave The Netherlands.

Going door-to-door
Can't get to the mosque for an earful of jihad? No problem. In Kuwait there are traveling preachers who'll bring it to your front door. From ADNKI:
Kuwait City, 22 Nov. (AKI) - Five extremist 'preachers' have been arrested for going door-to-door spreading the doctrine of the terror group al-Qaeda among the inhabitants of a Kuwaiti city. Local newspaper al-Seyassah said the five were detained on Monday morning as they went around the al-Farwaniya area, knocking on doors and stopping citizens to talk to them about the importance of the Jihad (holy war) and the need to re-establish Sharia Islamic law in the world.
The five preachers had effectively been holding impromptu religious lessons on the Jihad all morning, until the police were alerted and they were arrested. The group of fundamentalist preachers was made up of three Egyptians and two Indonesians. The security services are trying to discover how they entered the country and if they had direct contact with terror groups active in Iraq.

PAKISTANI CHRISTIANS UNDER SIEGE
Believers Hold Day of Prayer
Burned Building. (Photo Courtesy APMA).
While Christians worldwide were observing the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, some Pakistani Christians were under siege by Islamic extremists at Sangala Hill, Pakistan.
The All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) reported in a news release that Christian churches, schools, a convent, Bibles and other religious materials were burned.
On Nov. 17, APMA reported, Pakistani Christians observed a "black day" and a day of prayer to protest the attack. All Christian schools were closed throughout Pakistan, and black flags were hoisted on Christian houses as a symbol of protest.
In some Pakistani cities, APMA reported, there were protests and in many other cities prayers gatherings were held to mourn and pray. At the site of incident in Sangala Hill, local Christians prayed in front of burnt Presbyterian and Catholic Churches. Believers spent the day in prayer and mourning, "with Christian women wailing and men praying tearfully, wearing black band around their arms as a sign of protest. Some people even put ashes of burnt Holy Bibles on their heads to mourn." Many believers praying in these burnt-out buildings were grief-stricken.
Christians in Basti Asyia, Sangala Hill, hoisted black flags on the roofs of their houses. Christians throughout Pakistan were united, APMA reported, against this "brutal act of terrorism at Sangla Hill," in which the Muslim mob rampaged through the town and burned a Catholic Church, two Presbyterian Churches, a Sister's Convent, a girls' hostel, a Sister's Chapel, a high school, and houses of Christians.
HOW THE RAMPAGE STARTED
According to the news release from APMA, the rampage stated when a local Muslim, Kalu Sunyara, accused a Christian man, Yousaf Masih, of burning the Koran.
The human rights organization the Jubilee Campaign (www.jubileecampaign.org) reported that the incident began when Masih won 35,000 rupees in a gambling game played with several Muslims.
"A Muslim friend of Yousaf's, Saleem Sunihara, asked Yousaf to give him some of this money, which Yousaf refused to do," the Jubilee Campaign reported. "Eyewitnesses report that Saleem then threw a burning matchstick into a storage room, or Qur'an Mahal, used to keep disposed fragments of the Qur'an, Arabic newspapers and other Arabic-language literature. Students of a seminary run by Anjuman-e- Melad-i-Mustafa, and the staff of a dispensary adjacent to the Qur'an Mahal, rushed to the spot and saved the remaining material."
Some hours after this incident, the Jubilee Campaign reported, announcements were made from mosques asking people to gather in front of the town's central mosque. According to the Jubilee Campaign, similar announcements were again made later.
"The announcers were asking men to gather in order to teach the Christians a lesson," the Jubilee Campaign reported. "Responding to the call, a large mob carrying hockey sticks, iron rods and axes assembled at the appointed place. Eyewitnesses said some youths also carried tins of kerosene. Several busloads of men from outside Sangla Hill were also seen joining the mob. The Muslim religious leaders made fiery speeches, accused Yousaf Masih of blasphemy, and provoked a mob of 2,000 to 3,000 men to set fire to all five of the Christian places of worship in the town."
APMA reported that the mob "burned more than 300 Holy Bibles, Christian literature, crosses, and other Christian sacred material. Even the school books (and) ... the Islamic studies books and copies of (the) Koran were set on fire by the Muslim mob."
According to APMA, a specialized chemical was used to ignite the blaze.
Presbyterian Pastor Tajamel Perveez told the APMA team, the news release stated, that the attackers also burned more than 200 Holy Bibles "including other sacred material." He told APMA "that his church and every thing in his residence is destroyed and burned, (and) he has only one (item of clothing) that he is wearing all the time."
Fr. Samson Dilawar, parish priest of the Roman Catholic Church, was still dressed in the cassock in which he fled when the mob knocked down the gate to his church compound.
Dilawar told the APMA team, "I heard the mullahs had been telling people over loud speakers, We are guardians of (the) Koran, and it is our foremost duty to teach a lesson to those kafirs (infidels). They shouted provocative and insulting slogans against the Christians."
Dilawar said, APMA reported, "We will not remove the ashes of Holy Bibles and damaged material from the church until the Chief Minister or Prime Minister visit (the) church. The mob also burned the Christian marriage record room ... where hundred years (of old records were) kept."
Sister Mariam Bernate told the APMA team that the majority of school students are Muslims, and the mob burned materials that included Islamic books.
Bernate told APMA, the news release stated, that the mob also attacked a pharmacy. "The doors, windows and shelves of the dispensary were broken, and a huge quantity of life-saving drugs were destroyed in the dispensary where a large number of Muslims were being treated before the attack."
APMA stated that local Christians told organizational workers, "The local police are also involved in criminal negligence and encouraging the perpetrators to commit such violence."
All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) strongly condemned "this gross act of terrorism." At an APMA press conference held on Nov. 14, APMA Chairman Shahbaz Bhatti , demanded, the news release stated, that the government set up a judicial commission to probe the incident and the culprits should be tried in an anti- terrorist court.
As a result of the incident, APMA reported, Christians scattered to save their lives. APMA added that Pastor Tajamel Perveez, Catholic Priest Fr. Samson Dilawar and others had contacted the police and asked them for beefed-up security. However, according to APMA their efforts were to no avail. The police authority "ignored their request."
APMA commented, "The local police instead of guarding the churches acted as onlooker, while the mob chanted provocative slogans against the Christians ... hurled stones on the churches and broke the main gate of Catholic Church. After vandalizing the public for two hours, the mob dispersed."
Bhatti added, the news release stated, "The local police officials should be suspended immediately, and an investigation should be launched for their criminal negligence and irresponsibility. This is a brutal act of religious terrorism and must be condemned at all levels. Minorities are shocked by the ferocity of the attack, and waves of grief and anger has spread among the Christians through out Pakistan. This tragic incident has hurt the religious sentiments of millions of Pakistani Christians."
On Nov. 17, APMA stated, the Chief Minister of Punjab Chaudhry Perveez Elahi, visited the incident site and assured the Christian community that he had ordered a judicial inquiry and suspended local police officials for their "negligence."
Police arrested more than 88 people in connection to the Nov. 12 attack, APMA stated, "but the key culprits nominated by the Christian community of Sangala Hill are still at large."
Speaking in the news release, APMA asked for special prayer for the affected Christians who are still suffering from the aftermath of the incident.
According to the World Evangelical Alliance (www.worldevangelical.org/persecute/persec_pakistan_ii_28oct03.html), "APMA is a coalition representing Pakistan's non-Muslim religious minorities (Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Balmeek, Bheel, Maingwal, Zoarastrian, Bahai and Kelash communities). Using advocacy and lobbying, APMA "raise(s) minorities' issues and concerns with the government authorities, parliamentarians, human rights organizations and media."
APMA, the World Evangelical Alliance statement continued, is assisting many victims of "discriminatory laws and blasphemy laws, and also supporting and protecting victims of terrorist attacks of Islamic militants especially since 11 Sept. 2001 ... APMA is struggling to protect and ensure religious freedom in Pakistan."
According to International Christian Concern (www.persecution.org/Countries/pakistan.html), 97.6% of Pakistan's people are Muslims. Hindus comprise 1.5% and Christians 1.7%. 70% of the Christian population is in the poorest segment of society. The growth of the Christian church is calculated at 3.9%.
