"Shooting at Tacoma Mall leaves 7 injured
Man fires on shoppers, takes hostages, then gives up"

By JAKE ELLISON, CHRISTINE FREY AND ATHIMA CHANSANCHAI
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTERS

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "TACOMA -- A routine day of shopping turned into a terrifying scene at the Tacoma Mall Sunday, witnesses said, when a young man in a shirt and tie opened fire with an assault rifle, then kept three people hostage for hours before surrendering to police.

At least seven people were injured -- one critically -- and the mall was locked down Sunday afternoon as frightened shoppers scrambled for safety.

Shortly before 4 p.m., the gunman came out of a Sam Goody record store without a gun and surrendered to a SWAT team, said Mark Fulghum, a spokesman for Tacoma police. The hostages -- two store employees and a customer -- were released unhurt. Dominick S. Maldonado, 20, was booked on six counts of assault and three counts of kidnapping and was being held on $450,000 bail, according to Pierce County jail records.

One of the hostages said late Sunday night that Maldonado was angry at police. He said the gunman told the hostages his name and age and said the reason he opened fire in the mall was because "some officer did him wrong when he was younger.""

From the link:

Maldonado has a juvenile record dating back to 1998 that includes charges of burglary and theft, court records show. As part of a sentence in a 1998 case, he was prohibited from using or owning a firearm.

Odd, is it not, how criminals do not obey the law?

You're right.

Criminals are known for not respecting laws.

Terror alert in Dhaka over threat of attack
on rally
Web posted at: 11/21/2005 3:32:25
Source ::: Agencies

Dhaka: A terror alert has been sounded in the Bangladeshi capital and
surrounding areas following an intelligence report about possible bomb
attacks on an opposition rally in the city tomorrow.

According to the intelligence report, the banned Islamist outfit, the
Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) blamed for the August 17
serial blasts, has planned a series of bomb attacks in Dhaka. Different
groups of the militant outfit are reportedly trying to send a huge
quantity of high explosives to Dhaka through land or riverine routes.

The JMB is also trying to gather its highly trained cadres along with
members of the “suicide squad” to accomplish their mission. The JMB
might go for setting off high-powered explosives in Dhaka to eliminate
opposition and ruling party leaders and senior officials.

Keeping the intelligence reports in mind, a security blanket has been
thrown around the capital city since Saturday evening and surveillance
increased at all entrance and exit points by setting up check posts. The
security forces including the para-military forces, the Bangladesh Rifles
(BDR) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have been put on high alert
across the country to prevent any possible terrorist activity by the
suicide bombers of JMB.

Fourteen opposition political parties, headed by the Awami League,
have planned a huge anti-government rally on Tuesday. Political
sources said the opposition parties are likely to issue a one-month
ultimatum to the government to concede to their demands for holding
free and neutral polls under a non-partisan caretaker government.

The opposition has planned to gather 2.5 million people on the day.
The government has decided to deploy 15,000 security personnel for
the rally.

The government is planning to start a month-long “Clean Militant
Operation” across the country aimed at wiping out members of
different banned militant organisations, especially the JMB, according
to The Independent Sunday. The operation will start from this week

It would appear that the info about al-zarqawi is a rumor. See below.... I rate Evan Kohlmann and by the way, this site is a great source.

http://counterterror.typepad.com/

November 20, 2005
Al-Qaida Takes Casualties in Iraq -- But Apparently Not Zarqawi
Despite recent reports to the contrary, Al-Qaida's Committee in Iraq has suffered numerous casualties during recent combat operations in northern and western Iraq -- including both native and foreign fighters. As I hinted at in my previous post on Iraq's foreign fighters, at least four commanders from the designated foreign terrorist organization Asbat al-Ansar in southern Lebanon have been killed during intense fighting near the western towns of Al-Qaim and Al-Karabilah. Another Yemeni national -- a veteran of multiple trips to Afghanistan -- was also slain before he could participate in an intended suicide bombing mission.

Other, highly dubious reports have also surfaced in the media today suggesting that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi may have been himself killed in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul during a U.S. military raid on a suspected Al-Qaida hideout. Needless to say, such "tips" are often posted on fringe Arabic-language message forums on the Internet and are subsequently picked up by overeager news agencies -- but ultimately, most prove to be nothing more than unfounded rumor. Certainly, Al-Qaida doesn't seem to have been at all fazed by the reported Mosul raid. Not only has Al-Qaida issued nearly twenty new communiques in the last twenty four hours, but it also claimed credit for additional insurgent attacks on U.S. forces in Mosul. Apparently, the raid that "might have killed" Zarqawi did not even succeed in decapitating Al-Qaida's military command structure in the Mosul area. This Zarqawi report ultimately will be proven or disproven by the only sure way possible: forensic evidence collected on scene. But, at least for the moment--given what we do know--it seems fair to classify Zarqawi's would-be passing as extremely unlikely.

See: (UPI) Reports of Zarqawi's death played down

UPDATE: I've fixed the broken link to the Asbat al-Ansar PDF file

Zarqawi’s message hitting home in Arab World

By: Ray Hanania*

Everyone in the Arab World is denouncing Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his attacks against the people of Jordan these days.

It’s politically correct, even though suicide bombings happen elsewhere and no one says a word, especially when the victims are civilians in Israel.

The truth is Zarqawi has a fundamental core base of support in the Arab World, despite the harsh attacks, the strong words of denunciation, and the tragedy Zarqawi brought on his own people – he’s Jordanian and most of the victims of the triple suicide bombings were Arab and Muslim.

And, if we want to win the “War on Terrorism,” we had better wake-up.

Zarqawi’s attacks in Amman, Jordan did cause great human tragedy. It is hard for anyone to watch as the bodies of innocent civilians are dragged out of the carnage of what used to be a wedding or a popular hotel.

Yet, deep down, most Arabs and Muslims will forgive Zarqawi, mainly because his attacks are striking home.

For example, many Arabs are wondering out loud why Jordan’s King Abdullah, who claims to be the voice of freedom and Democracy in the Middle East, continues to remain silent as Israel reeks havoc on the Palestinian civilian population.

Israel’s continued abuses of Palestinian rights are outrageous. Yes, Israel has a right to fight the terrorists, but they have no right to destroy the lives of innocent family members who are related to suicide bombers.

Israel will destroy the home of the bomber’s family and even destroy the homes of neighbors in what Israel calls collective punishment.

Israel continues to murder Palestinians it asserts are “terrorists.” And some may be, but don’t they have to abide by international laws? If someone is a terrorist, shouldn’t they prove it in a court of law before they simply snuff out his or her life using an American-made missile that often also kills scores of nearby innocent Palestinian civilians?

Israel continues to confiscate Palestinian lands, is building the immoral and ugly “Wall” that they misleading call a “fence,” and although they have “withdrawn” from the Gaza Strip, the fact is they continue to treat the entire population like prisoners in one large, ugly prison.

Worse, if you criticize Israel, officials in the United States are the first to stand up and denounce the critics. They don’t care about the Palestinians.

And it’s not just in Palestine.

What about in Iraq, where more and more we learn about torture and violations of human rights?

The alleged purpose of the war in Iraq was to free the Iraqi people. They’re not free. They’re living in a Hell, imprisoned under a new dictatorship that is different only from Saddam Hussein’s tyranny by the fact that the Americans are better are “spinning” their actions.

How else can you explain the outrageous decision by the United States to avoid applying the fundamental basic rights of the Fourth Geneva Conventions to Arab prisoners?

Americans should remember that how we mistreat our prisoners will be exactly how other will mistreat our soldiers when they become prisoners.

Why isn’t King Abdullah talking about all this?

Why isn’t that other “Democratic” leader, Egypt’s President Husni Mubarak also denouncing American atrocities in Iraq or Israel’s continued violation of Palestinian rights in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Eact Jerusalem?

The Arab and Muslim “street” recognizes that Zarqawi is the only person who is championing the rights of the downtrodden. He is the only one who is speaking out against the injustices. He is the only one doing something to fight back.

They know that war is about violence and death, and they are learning from Israeli and the American policies that innocent people are killed and brushed aside all the time without anyone complaining.

So while they are outraged at the death of innocent Arabs and civilians in Amman, Jordan, they also are asking themselves quietly why they should be outraged when the American and Israeli publics are not outraged at all by their own governments’ abuses?

Israel and the United States must begin to impose the same standard of value on the life of an Arab, a Palestinian or a Muslim. The United States should force their tyrant allies, including in Egypt, to impose real Democracy and respect the rights of all civilians.

The American government must firmly punish those engaged in torture, military abuses and embrace true freedoms not just for those with whom they agree, but with everyone.

Until that happens, Zarqawi will remain the only available answer to the growing discontent in the Arab and Muslim Worlds.

That’s a frightening future that can only be blamed on the injustices that Americans are willing to turn their back on in Iraq, Israel and the rest of the Middle East.

Good Morning.

No, I fear that he is still alive, I have been listening to the news on the radio and it has gone from maybe he died to the fact that there is not much hope that he is injured and is not thought to be one that was in the house that was attacked.

Oh well, yours and our Military will be making another attempt.

The Military does not as a rule get the rewards for someone like him, but I am willing to bet that the unit has some type of betting pool, for who shoot him or when he will die.

I did hear one report that talked about if he had been killed, that it would make no difference in the war on terror, that there were enough leaders left to take his place and the attacks would continue.

Zarqawi, is one lucky (or smart) man.

Chávez builds base with grass-roots circles in U.S.
Miami Herald ^ | November 21, 2005 | PABLO BACHELET pbachelet@herald.com

Posted on 11/21/2005 5:06:58 AM EST by Cincinatus' Wife

WASHINGTON - Miami's Jesús Soto supports Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez's vision of ''participatory democracy.'' Valerie Pusch of Chicago backs Chávez because of his policies on behalf of the poor.

And they say so loudly, as heads of their local Bolivarian Circles -- among the dozen or so U.S. copies of the groups Chávez has set up throughout his country to mobilize Venezuelans on behalf of his socialist ``revolution.''

Even as Chávez attacks President Bush as his sworn nemesis, his government is running a strong campaign to curry favor with U.S. citizens through leftist grass-roots groups, paid lobbyists and public relations operatives and offers of cheap fuel for America's poor.

The Venezuelan leader is running a ''grass-roots foreign policy,'' said Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the Washington based Center for Economic and Policy Research, a group that supports Chávez.

''Obviously the government of the United States has not been very friendly and [the Venezuelans] figure they have a better chance at dealing directly with the people who don't have any particular reason not to like Venezuela,'' he added.

Chávez steadily accuses the Bush administration of planning to topple him, and his prosecutors have even filed charges of ''conspiracy to destroy the nation's republican form of government'' against four leaders of a Venezuelan activist group that got U.S. funds and helped organize a failed recall vote on the president last year. Gee, golly, now he wants "Tit for Tat", so we must stop all the messy water boarding of the prisoners and do the even messier job of cutting off their heads.

Interesting that the party who does the worst crimes, yells the loudest.

Good morning, how are you?

Thanks for the FR links for tunnels. I did not realize that earlier this year they uncovered tunnels on the B.C. border of Seattle as well. How long have they been in existence?

It sounds as though the commies in this article, are about to get a visit from Immigration authorities and my find they suddenly have visa problems. Or at least I do hope so.

This country needs to wake up, the fools like Chavez, the leader of Iran and N. Korea, will wake up one day and discover they made a mistake.

Insanity is free and lots of fools are using it.

Laughing, I read this article, it is a cry in your beer article about how difficult it was to find an attorney, after being arrested for immigration, intended violence against an Israel Support March.....in 2002.

They are so bad that even the ACLU refused to act for them,
then they wind up coneected to the Florida guy, al-arian and Lynn Stewart.........

The Arab lawyers didn't appear to want them for clients either.

According to them, we don't support Palestine supporters....
