Unmasking Political Correctness by William S. Lind
In this edition, Paul Weyrich refers to "cultural Marxism." He asked me, as Free Congress Foundation's resident historian, to write this column explaining what cultural Marxism is and where it came from.
In order to understand what something is and what to do about it, you have to know its history.
Cultural Marxism is a branch of western Marxism, different from the Marxism-Leninism of the old Soviet Union.
It is commonly known as "multiculturalism" or, less formally, Political Correctness.
From its beginning, the promoters of cultural Marxism have known they could be more effective if they concealed the Marxist nature of their work, hence the use of terms such as "multiculturalism."
Cultural Marxism began not in the 1960s but in 1919, immediately after World War I.
Marxist theory had predicted that in the event of a big European war, the working class all over Europe would rise up to overthrow capitalism and create communism. But when war came in 1914, that did not happen.
When it finally did happen in Russia in 1917, workers in other European countries did not support it.
What had gone wrong?
Independently, two Marxist theorists, Antonio Gramsci in Italy and Georg Lukacs in Hungary, came to the same answer: Western culture and the Christian religion had so blinded the working class to its true, Marxist class interest that Communism was impossible in the West until both could be destroyed.
In 1919, Lukacs asked, "Who will save us from Western civilization?" That same year, when he became Deputy Commissar for Culture in the short-lived Bolshevik Bela Kun government in Hungary, one of Lukacs's first acts was to introduce sex education into Hungary's public schools.
He knew that if he could destroy the West's traditional sexual morals, he would have taken a giant step toward destroying Western culture itself.
In 1923, inspired in part by Lukacs, a group of German Marxists established a think tank at Frankfurt University in Germany called the Institute for Social Research.
This institute, soon known simply as the Frankfurt School, would become the creator of cultural Marxism.
To translate Marxism from economic into cultural terms, the members of the Frankfurt School - - Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, Wilhelm Reich, Eric Fromm and Herbert Marcuse, to name the most important - - had to contradict Marx on several points.
They argued that culture was not just part of what Marx had called society's "superstructure," but an independent and very important variable.
They also said that the working class would not lead a Marxist revolution, because it was becoming part of the middle class, the hated bourgeoisie.
Who would? In the 1950s, Marcuse answered the question: a coalition of blacks, students, feminist women and homosexuals.
Fatefully for America, when Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933, the Frankfurt School fled - - and reestablished itself in New York City.
There, it shifted its focus from destroying traditional Western culture in Germany to destroying it in the United States.
To do so, it invented "Critical Theory."
What is the theory?
To criticize every traditional institution, starting with the family, brutally and unremittingly, in order to bring them down.
It wrote a series of "studies in prejudice," which said that anyone who believes in traditional Western culture is prejudiced, a "racist" or "sexist" of "fascist" - - and is also mentally ill.
Most importantly, the Frankfurt School crossed Marx with Freud, taking from psychology the technique of psychological conditioning.
Today, when the cultural Marxists want to do something like "normalize" homosexuality, they do not argue the point philosophically.
They just beam television show after television show into every American home where the only normal-seeming white male is a homosexual (the Frankfurt School's key people spent the war years in Hollywood).
After World War II ended, most members of the Frankfurt School went back to Germany.
But Herbert Marcuse stayed in America.
He took the highly abstract works of other Frankfurt School members and repackaged them in ways college students could read and understand.
In his book "Eros and Civilization," he argued that by freeing sex from any restraints, we could elevate the pleasure principle over the reality principle and create a society with no work, only play (Marcuse coined the phrase, "Make love, not war").
Marcuse also argued for what he called "liberating tolerance," which he defined as tolerance for all ideas coming from the Left and intolerance for any ideas coming from the Right.
In the 1960s, Marcuse became the chief "guru" of the New Left, and he injected the cultural Marxism of the Frankfurt School into the baby boom generation, to the point where it is now America's state ideology.
The future goal of conservatism must include unmasking multiculturalism and political correctness and tell the American people what they really are: cultural Marxism.
Its goal remains what Lukacs and Gramsci set in 1919: destroying Western culture and the Christian religion.
It has already made vast strides toward that goal.
But if the average American found out that political correctness is a form of Marxism, different from the Marxism of the Soviet Union but Marxism nonetheless, it would be in trouble.
The next conservatism needs to reveal the man behind the curtain - - old Karl Marx himself.

Police Chase, Standoff Ends With Shooting

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A man set fire to several police cars, shot at an
officer and crashed his truck into a courthouse during a pursuit and
standoff that lasted several hours. Police finally ended the ordeal by
shooting the man.
While holed up inside the courthouse, the man set at least one fire in
the building before police tracked him down in a stairwell, authorities
said. Authorities sent in a bomb squad after the arrest.
The suspect, whose name wasn't immediately released, was taken to
a hospital. His condition wasn't known.
An officer spotted the man just before dawn pouring liquid on cars
parked at the police department of a nearby town and setting them on
fire, authorities said. The officer chased the man in her car, but the
suspect evaded her after shooting at her. The officer crashed but
wasn't injured.
Officers surrounded the building and attempted to negotiate with the
man for several hours until they confronted him in the stairwell and
shot him.

Relying on Computer, U.S. Seeks to Prove Iran's
Nuclear Aims
NY Times ^ | November 13, 2005 | WILLIAM J. BROAD and DAVID E. SANGER
Posted on 11/12/2005 11:56:29 AM PST by neverdem
In mid-July, senior American intelligence officials called the leaders of
the international atomic inspection agency to the top of a skyscraper
overlooking the Danube in Vienna and unveiled the contents of what
they said was a stolen Iranian laptop computer.
The Americans flashed on a screen and spread over a conference
table selections from more than a thousand pages of Iranian computer
simulations and accounts of experiments, saying they showed a long
effort to design a nuclear warhead, according to a half-dozen
European and American participants in the meeting.
The documents, the Americans acknowledged from the start, do not
prove that Iran has an atomic bomb. They presented them as the
strongest evidence yet that, despite Iran's insistence that its nuclear
program is peaceful, the country is trying to develop a compact
warhead to fit atop its Shahab missile, which can reach Israel and
other countries in the Middle East.
The briefing for officials of the United Nations' International Atomic
Energy Agency, including its director Mohamed ElBaradei, was a
secret part of an American campaign to increase international
pressure on Iran. But while the intelligence has sold well among
countries like Britain, France and Germany, which reviewed the
documents as long as a year ago, it has been a tougher sell with
countries outside the inner circle.
The computer contained studies for crucial features of a nuclear
warhead, said European and American officials who had examined the
material, including a telltale sphere of detonators to trigger an atomic
explosion. The documents specified a blast roughly 2,000 feet above a
target - considered a prime altitude for a nuclear detonation.
Nonetheless, doubts about the intelligence persist among some
foreign analysts. In part, that is because American officials, citing the
need to protect their source, have largely refused to provide details
of...

Suspected arsonist arrested during job interview [at the police station!]

Dallas County Sheriff's deputies arrested a suspected arsonist Friday during a job interview for a position with the department.
Dallas resident Ernestina Garcia Guzman, 30, submitted her application and supporting documents for a Courtesy Patrol position, officials said. When deputies checked her name in an FBI database, they discovered a warrant for her arrest in New Mexico on a charge of conspiracy to commit arson, as well as four warrants for $1,678 worth of unpaid traffic citations from the Mesquite Police Department.
When confronted, Guzman denied knowledge of the incident in New Mexico. Deputies said she intentionally attempted to deceive them due to the fact she did not note her valid New Mexico driver's license number or her married name of Guzman on her employment application. Instead, she substituted a prior Texas driver's license number issued in her maiden name of Garcia. The warrants had been issued in her married name, showing the New Mexico license number as identification.
Officials said Guzman was transported to the Lew Sterrett Criminal Justice Center, where she was booked on the New Mexico and Mesquite charges. No bond was allowed on the New Mexico charges.
Guzman is not eligible for employment, deputies said.

Al-Qaeda vs. Queen Elizabeth?
The White House, the Capitol Building, the Pentagon, the British Parliament, George W. Bush, Tony Blair
all of these buildings and figures targeted for attack by Al-Qaeda seem to make some sort of strategic sense. But Her Majesty? From the AP:
Al-Qaida has named Queen Elizabeth II "one of the severest enemies of Islam," the Sunday Times newspaper reported, citing a video message allegedly obtained by Britain's security service.
Government officials were not immediately available Saturday night to confirm the report. A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman refused comment, saying it was a matter for the police.
In the video, Ayman al-Zawahiri, a leading lieutenant of Osama bin Laden, says the queen is responsible for what he terms Britain's "crusader laws" and calls her an enemy of Muslims, the paper said.
No doubt Prince Charles is currently en route to Pakistan in order to plead his mothers case before the court of Bin Laden.
