The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
What's become of bin Laden since he gave us all the slip?
Full Story

Some think he is dead, others that he is hiding because he is scared of being killed.

Whatever the reason for the strange disappearance of Osama bin Laden, not seen alive since his last mocking video statement a year ago, he is no longer the face of the global "jihad" against the West.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi { TM 25,TM 27 }, the Jordanian responsible for some of the worst atrocities in Iraq, has become the hero of the hour on militant Islamist websites.

A 'Tortured' Debate
Opinion Journat ^ | November 12, 2005 | Staff

Posted on 11/12/2005 2:53:20 AM PST by yoe

If Osama bin Laden is alive and looking for signs of flagging U.S. will to fight the war on terror, he need look no further than our national debate about interrogating his compatriots and others who would do us harm.

Post-9/11, after all, it is hardly far-fetched to imagine a scenario in which our ability to extract information from a terrorist is the only thing that might prevent a bioterror attack or even the nuclear annihilation of an American city. And we know for a fact that information wrung from 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and others has helped prevent further attacks on U.S. soil.

[snip]John McCain (R., Arizona) has pushed an amendment through the Senate that would effectively bar all stressful interrogation techniques. The danger for American security is that this would telegraph to every terrorist in the world that he has absolutely nothing to fear from silence should he fall into U.S. hands.

[snip]In Iraq at this very moment the military is dealing with a hardened al Qaeda wing headed by Abu Musab al Zarqawi, whose un-uniformed fighters are not entitled to Geneva Convention protections against aggressive interrogation. Neither the McCain Amendment nor the Administration's reaction to it send a message of resolve to win that intelligence war.

[snip]That such "torture" demagoguery can be successfully challenged was demonstrated earlier this year, when Amnesty International was forced to back down from its odious comparison of U.S. detention facilities to the Soviet gulag. We wish the Administration directly challenged its Congressional critics. The American people are wise enough to understand that we can't win the war on terror without good intelligence, and that there won't be good intelligence without aggressive interrogations.

SCHOOLGIRL DIES AFTER BEING SHOT IN INDONESIA
Her Death Heralds New Round Of Muslim Anti-Christian Violence

By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

SU (ANS) -- One schoolgirl has died and another lies seriously injured after being shot in Poso on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) reports that Siti Nuraini, 17, a Muslim, died in Poso Kota general hospital on November 9. Her Christian friend Ivon, also 17, remains in a critical condition after the attack on November 8.

CSW says the attack closely follows the beheading of three Christian schoolgirls on October 29 and represents a further escalation of the situation. Ida Sambue and Theresa, both 16, and Alfita, 18, were on their way to a Christian school they attend with 150 other children when they were attacked. A fourth girl, Noviana, 16, was left seriously injured.

According to CSW, the heads of the girls were reportedly found separately inside plastic bags, with a warning written on them that another 100 Christian teenagers would be killed. It is feared that this latest shooting is linked to the fulfillment of this threat.

The Reverend Rinaldy Damanik, Moderator for the Central Sulawesi Christian Reform Church, and Chairman of the Central Sulawesi Churches Crisis Co-ordination Centre is currently in the United Kingdom on a speaking tour with CSW.

Damanik has been in close touch with Christians and government officials in Sulawesi and has appealed for calm. He stressed the security officials needed to act promptly to ensure those guilty of the attacks are brought to justice and also to try and prevent further attacks.

He said: "I am very upset by this further violence. A very, very bad situation is getting worse. This attack is part of the militants' efforts to provoke further violence. I urge the UK government to realize this is not just a religious matter, but an attack on human rights."

As reported in the Jakarta Post, Presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng said the President had ordered the security forces to bring the perpetrators to justice, and urged residents not to launch revenge attacks.

Meanwhile, Army Chief of Staff General Djoko Santoso confirmed that the Indonesian Military (TNI) had apprehended five men who were believed to be the perpetrators of the beheadings. The Jakarta Post also reported that by the end of October, there was a total 3,500 police and army personnel stationed in Central Sulawesi after extra numbers were drafted in.

Tina Lambert, CSW's Advocacy Director, said: "It is clear this latest attack on an innocent schoolgirl is designed to provoke further religious violence on Sulawesi. CSW adds its voice to Rev Damanik's in calling for calm in the face of such an appalling incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who have lost their daughter. We urge the Indonesian government to do more to protect the innocent and prevent a return to widespread inter-religious violence."

BACKGROUND TO MUSLIM-CHRISTIAN VIOLENCE

Some 2,000 people lost their lives in inter-religious clashes on Sulawesi in 2000.

A peace agreement signed in December 2001 brought an end to the worst of the conflict, but sporadic attacks -- most of them against Christians -- have continued.

According to news agency Compass Direct, more troops arrived in Poso on November 3. This was in the wake of the discovery of a homemade bomb being found near the home of a local government official. The bomb was defused by a police bomb squad.

Another bomb was placed on a minibus traveling from Palu to Poso on October 27, reports Compass Direct. The bomb exploded, seriously injuring a 54-year-old man who was admitted to hospital for treatment for first- and second-degree burns. Other passengers were treated for minor injuries. Police said the bomb was a low-explosive device, filled with shrapnel for maximum impact. The minibus was owned by a Christian, being named "Omega."

CSW is a human rights organization which specializes in religious freedom, works on behalf of those persecuted for their Christian beliefs and promotes religious liberty for all.

Prayers for the families of the teenagers. I can't even imagine the thoughts and emotions that must dart toward them. May the Lord carry their burdens and sustain them with his grace... and bring the attackers to justice. In Jesus Christ's name. Amen

Welsh convert to Islam held for gun-smuggling in Afghanistan

Now why would a Welsh grandfather end up gun-smuggling in Afghanistan? Well, he was a convert to Islam. Yet somehow all the peaceful teachings of the religion that we keep hearing so much about don't seem to have had much of an effect on him.

The problem of the radicalization of converts is ongoing. Some analysts argue that they join jihad groups because of their relative ignorance of the Qur'an and Islam in general; they are, in other words, easily misled. Others point out that they come to the Qur'an and Islam without cultural baggage and preconceptions, and are in a better position to evaluate Salafi claims to represent "true Islam." In that case, the fact that any of them at all join jihad groups should be pondered carefully by government and law enforcement officials.

I doubt they are doing so.

"Grandad held for gun-smuggling," from icWales, with thanks to Twostellas:

A WELSH grandfather has been arrested on suspicion of gun smuggling in Afghanistan.
It was revealed yesterday that electrician Peter Eaton, 52, was arrested on October 12, and has been in Kabul prison ever since.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed last night the father-of-three from Hakin, near Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, was being held, "on suspicion of weapons smuggling offences."...

Mr Eaton converted to Islam after meeting his Samoan wife-to-be, a Red Cross translator, while working in Kuwait after the first Gulf War.

He has also worked in Bosnia, and has spent much of the past decade abroad, although he has visited the Milford Haven area, where he owns several properties, up to four times a year.

The Soviets then lined the pirates up against the railing and proceeded to shoot every two men and threw their bodies overboard. The remaining were told that this would happen again any time a Soviet ship was attacked. They were then tossed overboard and told to swim home and tell their buddies what had happened.

Swedish teen in 'White House terror plot'

A Swedish teenager who is being held in Sarajevo suspected of terrorist offences has been identified by Bosnian police as a radical Islamist known by the code-name Maximus.

The 18-year old has had email contact with three men arrested in Britain suspected of planning an attack on the White House, police sources in the Bosnian capital told weekly newspaper Slobodna Bosna.

“There is definitely a link between Sweden, Denmark and Britain,” said Mirsad Fasic, a journalist at Slobodna Bosna.

“In the computer that was taken from the apartment rented by the Swede and the Dane with Turkish ancestry, there were pictures of the White House and films about bomb-making,” Fasic added.

The Swede and the 19-year old Dane were arrested in Sarajevo on 19th October. A belt of the type used by suicide bombers was one of the objects found in their flat. Police also found guns and 30 kilograms of explosives.

Seven people have since been arrested in Denmark, and three in the UK. They had had email contact with a Swedish Islamist known as Maximus – now known to be the 18-year old.

Mideast democracy summit ends in rancor

MANAMA, Bahrain - A U.S.-backed Mideast democracy and
development summit ended in rancor Saturday despite adoption of
two initiatives that are part of President Bush's push to expand
political freedom in a region dominated by monarchies and effective
single-party rule.

A draft declaration on democratic and economic principles was
scuttled after Egypt insisted on language that would have given Arab
governments greater control over charitable and good-government
organizations.
