Orders from Brussels: Spell Christ with a lower-case “c

If the E.U. ordered Islam and Muhammad to henceforth be spelled with a lower case “i” and a lower case “m”, Muslims would riot, people would die, and the U.N. would pass a resolution condemning Islamophobia. Creating grammar rules dictating that Christ, Jew, and Judaism be spelled with lower case letters, however, will be met with silence. Christophobia is totally acceptable in the new age of the Caliphate.

Since Muslims hate Christians and Jews, it’s actually a form of tolerance to avoid offending Islam by showing any respect for other religions. Is it just me, or are things really going down hill fast in this world? At least we can count on Prince Charles to travel the world urging tolerance of Christianity, right? . . . . . . No?

It must be getting a little too close for Christmas for the chi-chi crystal palace of the pretentious European Union. Pooh-bahs in Brussels have come up with a new grammar rule for themselves and the Netherlands–making it official that the name “Christ” will soon be written with a lower-case “c”. That was the stipulation in an orthography reform published earlier this month in Brussels.

According to the Kath.net agency, the new spelling legislation will also stipulate that the Dutch word for “jews” (joden) be spelled with a capital “J” when referring to nationality and with a lower-case “j” when referring to the religion. The changes will be mandatory in August of 2006. There is no description of the fines offenders will face if they keep right on spelling “Christ” with a capital “C”.

The new spelling regulations are coming from the same folk, who include as one of their seat numbers in the august and austere chamber in which they gather to prevaricate on all things politically correct, the number 666.

The European Union hierarchy may have numbered the seat 666, but at last count no one has had the courage to actually claim the seat as their own.

At the European Union, the name of the humble carpenter from Nazareth may be diminished by lower-case spelling, but Javier Solana, The Great will continue to have his name spelled in capital letters. . . . .

Hey, eu, I got a new plan for you. Since the issue of capital letters is going to cause such an uproar, the only bureaucratically proper thing for an eu bureaucrat to do is:

eliminate ALL capital letters altogether. ALL of em.

In the new tolerant socialist and appeasement-minded europe there should be NO preferential letters and no "upper" and "lower" cases.

Let the doggone Americans stick with their bourgeois punctuation.

Oh my God! Those godless E.U. commies are attacking Jesus grammatically! Quick, everybody donate a lot of money to Contender Ministries for the epic battle against this heinous persecution of Christians!

And now for something completely different: the reality.

The Nederlandse Taalunie (Dutch Language Union), not E.U., decreed that only when you use 'christus' as a statue of Christ in the Dutch language, that it's written with a lowercase letter. In the name 'Christus', like any proper name, capitalization is retained.

Sorry to rain on the paranoia party. :-)

Nice to see a realistic explanation - I figured it was probably bogus since they didn't provide citations for the supposed new rules, but I'm impressed you found the source of their mistake.

A mistake, I'm sure, which was honest and not motivated by the urge to panic the faithful and scoop up donations for the 'good fight'...

I was just getting ready to post this:

Trivial detail: the Dutch spelling reform did not request to change the spelling of Christ. Names of persons keep the capital. The new spelling only clarified that when writing about a statue of Christ, then the art lexicon refers to it, in shortened form, as “a christ”. Like “a buddha”. The small case is to clarify, out of respect for the person, that here we are talking about an object, of which there are thousands.
