My guess is:

1- The Dems know something will leak out of the Senate, but they will use this "closed session" ruse to cover it.

2- The Dems are trying to take Judge Alito off the front page, especially in light of some of the dingbat comments made about him from those on the far Left.

I lean towards #2.
