Senate Coverage -- (November '05)
Thomas ^ | 11-01-05 | US Congress

Posted on 11/01/2005 5:12:40 AM PST by OXENinFLA

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority

And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.

He is totally saying what WE don't LIKE and saying that WARNER agrees to it...

He's just creating stuff he can trot out later and trying to jam stuff into the Congressional Record that he can use to say "this is what we meant."

Why does Lieberman want Levin's amendment to be voted on first?

He thinks it will be rejected, and those who voted for the Levin amendment would then be free to vote for the Warner amendment, which would pass by a wide margin.

I hope you are right...but, to tell you the truth, I don't like either amendment...

If I were a Senator I would abstain from voting at all...just to make that very point.

I have a busy, busy morning tomorrow with both of my granddaughters... and won't be able to watch the Senate or post until about noon....and they will be on break until 2:15...

SO>..could you guys keep good notes...about votes...but, do you guys think it is weird that such an important vote will be taken on a couple of amendments with no more debate than tonight and 2 minutes on each side tomorrow morning???

You are right, voting NO on both would send a message to these two old men that want to dictate to the rest of the Senate..

I suppose this is the way things are done...but, for amendment this important to the lives of our troops...I sure would have preferred to hear more voices of Senators on this...

Cripes...they want presidential powers, without being the president. No, I take this back; they want power OVER the president; more power than the president has.

Actually, I just saw you on a thread discussing this subject and I was going to post this link on that thread...

it will keep more people on one thread...instead of spreading posters to 3-4 threads...same subject.

Did any of you see the debate about this...and how much it this costing us???

Bless her heart.

See water and energy bill - it did pass, but Cat 5 levees are not in there. The routine Corps of Engineering stuff is, that is certain.

Water and energy bill, huh?

I just was looking at the list of amendments by Landrieu re: the levees and sure didn't see one...

I will go back and look at that bill...thanks.

Mash here -> 109th Congress - House - November 7, 2005
Navigate to: 37 . CONFERENCE REPORT ON H.R. 2419, ENERGY AND WATER DEVELOPMENT

ENERGY AND WATER APPROPRIATIONS BILL, 2006 (S. Rept. 109-84)
CONFERENCE REPORT ON H.R. 2419 (H. Rept. 109-275)

The bill is long. Search for "category". "levee" is a fun search too. Sacramento is the BIGGEST risk area in the USA for flooding due to levee problems. The below is an example of text from the trhee versions linked above. I hvae no idea what passed, but whatever it is, is only a study.

INVESTIGATIONS

For expenses necessary for the collection and study of basic information pertaining to river and harbor, flood control, shore protection and storm damage reduction, aquatic ecosystem restoration, and related projects, restudy of authorized projects, miscellaneous investigations, and, when authorized by law, surveys and detailed studies and plans and specifications of projects prior to construction, $164,000,000, to remain available until expended: Provided, That, notwithstanding any other provision of law, within the funds provided under this heading, $1,000,000 shall be available for planning assistance to the state of Ohio for Stark County watershed basin study: Provided further, That using $8,000,000 of the funds provided herein, the Secretary of the Army, acting through the Chief of Engineers, is directed to conduct a comprehensive hurricane protection analysis and design at full federal expense to develop and present a full range of flood control, coastal restoration, and hurricane protection measures exclusive of normal policy considerations for South Louisiana and the Secretary shall submit a preliminary technical report for comprehensive Category 5 protection within 6 months of enactment of this Act and a final technical report for Category 5 protection within 24 months of enactment of this Act: Provided further, That the Secretary shall consider providing protection for a storm surge equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane within the project area and may submit reports on component areas of the larger protection program for authorization as soon as practicable: Provided further, That the analysis shall be conducted in close coordination with the State of Louisiana and its appropriate agencies.

She sure has turned into a one trick pony. She's looking for bigger fish, and it'll be interesting to watch some of the begging (e.g., voting legislation) being rejected.
