BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Col. William Wood, commanding officer of the 184th Infantry Regiment, died last week, becoming the highest-ranking U.S. officer to be killed in combat in the Iraq war, the U.S. military said Monday.Wood, based at Forward Operating Base Falcon in the northern province of Babil, had responded to a roadside bomb Thursday and was giving orders to his men as they secured the area when a secondary explosion blew him backwards into a canal, killing him instantly, the military said.
Wood, 44, was based at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
A memorial service will be held for him Tuesday at a forward operating base in Iraq, the military said.
At the time of his death, Wood wore the rank of lieutenant colonel. He had not been informed that he had been approved for promotion to colonel.

Damn IEDs
And the media cheers...
May God bless his family tonight...
Rest in Peace, Colonel.
God Bless our troops and his family and loved ones...
He wasn't killed, he was murdered. I no longer say that our troops are being killed in Iraq.
The media is just salivating in hopes a general dies.
RIP Colonel, you earned all our thanks and respect.

Rest in peace, Colonel Wood.
Your sacrifice shall not be in vain.
God be with Colonel Wood's family in their loss.
Gererals do die in combat but if the MSM thinks that disheartens the troops they are wrong. The troops always rally around fallen leaders.
We need to develop better tactics against these IEDs.
There must be an electronic sensing device that we can develop to use to spot these. Using Humvees is not working.
Are there so many underground pipes that we can sense these even by magnetic means. In some times, the IED would be the only metallic thing in the ground in the street.
Maybe we should tie an imam to each vehicle's bumper as a sensing device. This way we all go together.
Towns in which these explode need to experience pain, or the bad guys are not going to be outed.
This sounds harsh, I know, but we are losing too many good men and women to let this go on. The IED is now the weapon of choice for the jihadis and it has to be nullified.
That said, it's good to die with your boots on. If I gotta go, and I do, eventually, I'd prefer combat to wasting away in a retirement home.
/john (sick and tired of stateside TDYs, and waiting on orders "over there")
1-184 Infantry is a California National Guard unit attached to 3rd ID. RIP COL Wood.

Better defenses against IEDs are in the works, but not nearly soon enough.
Bingo. All of my combat vets are so pissed off, they'd spray the bastards and use major weapons to mitigate this BS. We seem to be in a PC "war."
The general consencus is pull off the gloves and do what needs to be done.
I worked with a guy who flew P51s based out of London on combat missions over Dresden Germany when B29s were bombing the shit out of the Germans.
Today, it APPEARS that we're playing mental masturbation with the "United Nations." That is my own personal assessment of the appraoch that W, and Rummy's approach. I do NOT understand why.
Then again, I guess I'm just too stooopid.
