BOSTON - Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein resigned Monday, a stunning move that surprised the baseball world one year after he helped build Boston's first World Series championship team since 1918.
The 31-year-old Epstein was reportedly offered about $4.5 million for a three-year extension - quadruple his previous salary. But it was still short of the $2.5 million a year the Red Sox offered Oakland's Billy Beane in 2002 before making Epstein the youngest GM in baseball history.

What a surprise. I was convinced he would end up in New York, but the Yankees re-signed Brian Cashman just last week.
Wasn't Epstein one of the sweathogs on Welcome Back Kotter?
Either he has a better job offer in his back pocket or he's an idiot.

Some folks sure have a high opinion of themselves.
hmmm - LA?
Some consider it wise to make an effort to familiarize themselves with the particulars of a story before they embarrass themselves with ignorant assumptions.

Thanks
Yeah, but that was in chat and this is an actual article in news. Not everyone subscribes to the former.
Slick - cath the eye of the Admin mod on your first post!
WTG!
You've got to be f'ing kidding me. This will lead to the downfall of the Red Sox. Just when I had hopes that they were going to enter into an extended period of achievement.
gotcha....
ZING!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, but anyone with a checkbook as big as the SOX, can pay to build a winner.
Theo made a number of HORRIBLE moves, not the least of which, overpaying for Rentawreck and Folk.
Take a hike Theo.
Of course - I get so tired of the Red Sox fans acting like they are a small market team when their payroll dwarfs any other team besides the Yankees. Without the Yankees, the Red Sox would be the evil empire.
My point is that with any team, the payroll is finite - even with the Yankees and Red Sox. Billy Beane's payroll with the A's was much smaller but he maximized the value of the payroll by signing players who were vastly underrated or unknown.
Epstien was the same way. Instead of routinely throwing money and long term contracts at big name veterans that were in the decline phase of their career, Epstien signed players that were actually worth the money.
Consider how many times the Yankees and other clubs have wasted their money by signing a 34 year old big name free agent to an 8 year contract. Bernie Wiliams is a good example of this. That is how the Red Sox ended up with a superior lineup to the Yankees. Every Yankee fan is cheering now if Epstien is going to be replaced with a conventional GM that just signs big name free agents.
maybe he is going in on a new venture with ex radio guy ken hamblin
The season is long over and the Bosox keep on losing...
San Francisco?
