GOP Urges Bush on High Court Nomination
SF Gate ^ | October 30, 2005 | Hope Yen

President Bush neared a decision on a new nominee for the Supreme Court as Republican lawmakers suggested Sunday he should pick a solid conservative with a track record as a judge.

But the Senate's top Democrat raised the possibility of "a lot of problems" if Bush settles on federal appeals judge Samuel Alito to succeed retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, a swing voter on abortion and other social issues.

Democratic Senator Harry Reid has now singled out potential Supreme Court Nominee Judge Samuel Alito as someone he and his leftist friends particularly dislike. Referring to Alito, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid actually said "That is not one of the names that I've suggested to the president".

Harry Reid's antipathy for Alito is one of many excellent reasons for conservatives to support Alito!

Let's roll.

Hopefully Reid singling out Alito means that Alito is almost certainly the pick!

Bush's nominee will need the support from conservatives that Miers lacked and backing from moderates to escape a Senate filibuster.

Nah, there's another way.

Bush should have picked before he left. The added time has give the dems ammo to say we warned you not to pick this candidate.

I don't understand why Bush needed this weekend for the pics. They have been through this twice already. They were all vetted this past summer.

I was originally for Luttig but after reading his partial birth abortion opinion I would now rather see Alito.

Very bad luck with Reid coming out against Alito today. The white house is always scared death of Reid. He was the one that recommended Miers. I hope this 11th hour warning doesn't take Alito out of the mix. Bush should have picked the nominee before he left and had that be the fight on the weekend talk shows. I am sick of this Libby case. Enough is enough. Now Bush will have to wait until Tuesday because he can't pick her today or tomorrow because this is Rosa Parks time. The best chance for Bush to have picked a conservative was to have picked one right away. More time for the Bush white house to get cold feet and capitualte to Reid. Expect a woman moderate again.

Somebody tell Reid he is not dictator of the senate.

SF Gate lets an almost-local (Nevada's Harry Reid) diss Alito while letting a beltway insider (D.C.'s Gary Bauer) mention Janice R. Brown. It seems to me that the Democrats and media liberals are running scared. They can't predict exactly what will happen if JRB is nominated, since she does not conform to the white-conservative-middle-class-male mold that they make careers out of bashing. Bush should just toss a JRB nomination into their midst as a "Bouncing Betty."

Sometimes the best defense is a good offense.

If First had the cojones back in the spring to control the friggin' RINOS, the Constitutional Option could have been passed and much of the upcoming unpleasantness avoided.

"That is not one of the names that I've suggested to the president".

Someone please explain to me why Reid thinks he is the person whose job it is to give the President his short list?

"The white house is always scared death of Reid. He was the one that recommended Miers."

And seeing how that turned out, the White House should be even more scared of Reid. As in scared to follow any recommendation he makes!

You guys are giving me a hardon for JRB - and I'm a woman for crying out loud! I don't know much about any of the possible nominees, but I believe what Dick Morris said about this President playing chess, not checkers.

We did win the blessed election (thanks, Americans!). I hope we clean up in 2006, too. But in the interim, I would like W to make us proud. I'd like him to remember that we hired him to do a job. I'd like him to do it.

I like Ann Coulter for the way that she thinks. I don't care for her comportment. But isn't it a nice fantasy to think of her on the Supreme Court making conservative decisions and writing conservative opinions?

In some ways, I'd love to see Ann slap the left silly for the next 40 years from a perch on the SCOTUS. In other ways, I'd just like to see Ann.

JRB, OTOH, would trigger a nuclear meltdown in the left. They'd explode over any moral conservative, but they'd implode to the same degree by the strictures of political correctness and the fact that an attack on her would open themselves to being disemboweled and branded hypocrites in front of the black slaves on the RAT plantation.

Sweets to the sweet.

It's time the Republicans stopped looking for stealth candidates that they feel they can "sneak past" the Democrats. Instead, we should be nominating known, "in-your-face" conservatives, and have it out with the Dems once and for all. The Republicans control the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate. It's time they started acting like it.

Bush should have picked before he left

Bad politics. Looks like a desperation attempt to divert the media away from the Libby non story. Give TV pundits, News Papers and Sunday Talking heads almost 72 hours to set the media template before the Conservative Talk Radio show hosts get a shot. A early weekday announcement after the "News" papers are out give Talk Radio the 1st shot at setting the Media template. Makes the Hysteric Left have to respond to what our side is saying about it rather then have all our side talking about what THE Dinosaur Media has been saying all weekend.

"That is not one of the names that I've suggested to the president," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told "Late Edition" on CNN.

Good. Another plus for Alito.
