WASHINGTON - Rebounding from the failed nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, President Bush is poised to select between two of the nation's leading conservative federal appeals court judges--both experienced jurists with deep backgrounds in constitutional law--for what promises to be a bruising Senate confirmation battle. With an announcement expected Sunday or Monday, administration officials have narrowed the focus to Judges Samuel Alito of New Jersey and J. Michael Luttig of Virginia, sources involved in the process said.

I'm for Luttig, but either will do.

I wouldn't exactly call it a debate. It is more like visiting the monkey cage in the zoo. They scream and throw feces at you, but in the end they do nothing to you that a shower and a change of clothes can't fix. The Democrats will scream, rant, cry, throw mud, etc. but in the end Luttig or Alito will be confirmed.

Well, everyone got it wrong the last time. Way wrong. We're going to have to wait and see. After Miers, I don't trust any predictions.

I'm still not convinced that President Bush is going to name a true conservative to the court this round. We'll see.

These trial balloons better be true. The base is already excited about the prospect of Alito or Luttig being the nominee. If neither are and someone with less conservative credentials is nominated, it would dampen the building enusthaism.

Even before John Roberts was picked, Michael Luttig was the best conservative jurist available.

Luttig is younger.

Pick him now and choose Alito when John Paul Stevens vacates.

That's putting it mildly, I think. FR would explode. I'm not sure how much difference that would make, but FR would explode.

I'm counseling caution on this nomination. We sure missed the pick of Miers. I'm not convinced.

I'd wait 'til the announcement before the celebration. Bush has a habit of pulling all kinds of rabbits from hats. One of these two would be fine, but he may have someone else altogether in mind.

According to FOX News, a lot of people are refering to Alito as "Scalito". :~)

I am hoping for Janice Rogers Brown. I just have this sinking feeling or 'woman's premonition' that if President Bush does not appoint a woman he is handing the liberal media and Democrats his head on a silver platter. Sure they 'sound' like the men would be a good choice, but when it is done, they will eat him alive and accuse all conservative Republicans of being anti-woman.

Janice Rogers Brown, as a powerful, conservative black woman would stand tall in the hearings. I just want one more time to see the Democrats try to rip this black woman judge apart as they did Judge Thomas. After Katrina and the horrible lies about President Bush and black people, I think this would nip that in the bud. I think it would be one swing with a little rock that would wipe down the Goliath of the liberal press and the Democrats. I think down deep they are all on their knees today praying she won't be chosen.

In addition, I would like to see a woman on the court and she seems one of the chief women on the list with excellent credentials. Well, today I can dream...

Thank goodness we didn't have to settle for Miers. I'm happy for the president, too. That nomination would have been for his legacy what "read my lips" was for his father's. It would have destroyed it.
