A Green Bay restaurant owner has been sentenced for hiring illegal aliens to work in his three restaurants and for providing them with false identity documents, according to U.S. Attorney Steven Biskupic in Milwaukee.
Steven Metzler, 46, co-owner of Julie's Café L.L.C., was sentenced Oct. 13 to five years' probation and six months of house confinement. He also was fined $5,000 and Julie's Café was fined $20,000, Biskupic said.
Julie's Café has two restaurants in Green Bay and one outlet in DePere. The company is owned by Metzler and his wife, Biskupic said.
From 1998 until June 15, 2004, the company employed illegal aliens who were required to buy false identification documents from Metzler and his wife in order to work, Biskupic said. The documents included fraudulent Social Security cards and birth certificates of United States citizens, he said.
The illegal workers were paid in cash, and the fees for the false identity papers were deducted from their wages, Biskupic said. Metzler harbored the aliens by providing them with employment at the restaurants, he said.
Julie's Café L.L.C. was charged in April with employing illegal aliens, and Metzler pleaded guilty that month to harboring illegal aliens, Biskupic said.
The charges resulted from an investigation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement department, the Green Bay Police Department and the U.S. Social Security Administration, Biskupic said.
He deserves time in prison.
It won't get fixed, none of it, as long as Bush is in the White House...and it is questionable even after that.
yeah, a little jail time and I bet he won't hire anymore illegals. This amounts to a slap on the wrist.
This is INSANITY !!
ping-a-ling
Selling SSNs aand birth certificates and all he gets is probation. That's weak.
I totally agree, the continueing disgrace of Criminal Illegal Aliens continues un abated and until some real people with a backbone takes this administration to task we are all going to be exposed and laid open to abuse of power in high places. Time to lock em up and throw away the keys and start over from the top down, I write this as a true conservative not a republican, democrat or anything else. This is not what I wore the uniform to support and it is time to kick the bums of every persuasion out on their ears!
Did you notice that the article never mentioned what happened to the illegal aliens? If the employer got off this easy, the illegals probably received complimentary green cards.
And where is the ACLU? These poor immigrants were being taken advantage of. But this guy should have gotten a lot more than he did. If they have more of these prosecutions, maybe employers would rethink knowingly hiring illegals. But until local law enforcement can and will start making arrests, nothing will change.
Crap - you can pay 20 grand with a credit card!
What ticks me off here is that the judge who slapped him on the wrist isn't mentioned. These people, like those on parole boards, inflict their bad jufgement on the public time and again and get off scott free because they do all this in the shadows.
If the judge was elected, he should be thrown out in the next election. It he was appointed, the guy who appointed him should be dumped. Until these people start feeling the heat, outrages like this will continue.
I wrote BusWeek and asked why the reporter didn't mention the judges name. Be interesting to see if I get a reply.

Illegals are a federal problem. There's nothing that local law enforcement officials can do, and most of them aren't going to waste the manpower and time chasing illegals, knowing that they'll be back on the streets within days.
And what do you think the feds are actually going to do? Where I live we have Mexicans working all over the place and I would assume many are illegals. None of them look scared of the feds to me. Ultimately it is a local problem that needs to be solved at the local level.
I always thought forged documents was serious. Guess not.
When does IR$ & $tate Trea$ury Dept step up to the plate as the cleanup batters?
Did you ever hear back from them? I found out that the trial was in Brown County Circuit Court.

It's too bad that the judge didn't throw the book at him. Anyway, here is a list of the possible culprits:
Brown County Circuit Court - Green Bay, Wisconsin
Judge William M. Atkinson
Judge Sue E. Bischel
Judge Richard J. Dietz
Judge Kendall M. Kelley
Judge John Dennis McKay
Judge Peter Joseph Naze

Brown County's current court records are maintained and presented with the Director of State Courts in Madison through the Circuit Court Automation Program (CCAP). These records and instructions can be reviewed at http://wcca.wicourts.gov/index.xsl
Especially when you consider what he could've been sentenced to. Read it and weep. (Just damn!)
