HOLMDEL, N.J. -- The head coach of the Holmdel High School football team, Joe O'Connor, has resigned along with all nine assistant coaches over what O'Connor says was an undermining of his authority by the school administration.

O'Connor quit Monday, saying the administration had reinstated a player after the coach made him leave the team over discipline problems. On Wednesday, nine assistant coaches decided to resign from the team as well in a show of solidarity with O'Connor.

I don't care how good he is. I have four words - Lawrence Phillips / Maurice Clarrett. Bravo Coach(es).

Agreed. Sounds like they (administration) are trying to cultivate another Randy Moss or Bill Romanowski.

>>>>Ya really gotta wonder exactly what the board was thinking by appointing parents as assistant coaches.

Bump

I know the problems we have keeping little johnnies parent(s) off the field in grammar school sports. This is a disaster that will be more amusing then the game.

I used to have some respect for Nebraska before the Phillips incident. The guy needed to do some serious jail time, but hardly got a slap on the wrist.

I wonder what prompted the suits to over-ride the coach?
Is this kid a superstar player or something?

"Do we have any idea what the kid actually did?"

Did you click the link to read the article?

>>According to O'Connor, the player in question had a history of breaking team rules, and when he traded words with another player during last Saturday's loss to Red Bank Catholic, the coach cut him from the team.

On Monday, O'Connor said the school administration reinstated the player, and the coach _ in the middle of his sixth season _ decided to leave.<<

No - I bet he was first string - why would a third string kid's parents fight? Not for the fun of it.

Good for those coaches! I'd love to be around for the next election of the school board there. Taking a students side over the whole coaching staff is a new level in stupidity. I wonder if any students will quit the team or transfer to another school. It would be something if their football program disappears because of that little punk. There's more than one way to make sure a snot like that doesn't play football.

And we wonder why our property taxes are sky high here in NJ.

At one point our district had far more administrators per pupil than all the rest of the surrounding communities.

Bad for the other kids on the team. But, I would not want to be the kid who was cut. His arse is toast in that school and on that team. He basically destroyed the season of the other kids by his, and his parents, selfish actions. Wouldn't be suprised if he suffers an injury on the field (or in the locker room).

"If my son played on that team he wouldn't be suiting up for any more games until the REAL coaches returned."

BINGO!!! THAT is how you nip this in the bud. Parents need to also step up make their sons understand why they WON'T be on the field with that little punk. And the players need to give the brat hell. If they can't field a team because of the punk, he will be the biggest pariah in the school.

No different in any community where the athletes are privileged.....to cut class, fail tests, be disruptive to teachers, ignore the coaches rules.

At the end of the year, they get the awards too.

According to another article, that kid sat on the sidelines by himself at the first practice after the coaches quit and didn't participate.

And we wonder why our property taxes are sky high here in NJ.

There's an elementary school near my home. Grades K-6. It's not that large a school and if there's one, there are fifty cars in the parking lot during the school day. I can't even imagine how non-essential employees are in that school.

The High School in town has three Assistant Principals. The same sized high school when I attended had one, which was plenty. It's beyond insane, but it's for the children. NJ is run by a Soccer Mom mentality. Get me out of here!

The new assistant coaches, the majority of whom are parents of current football players...

Oh, yeah, that'll work real good.

Wonder if the school has enough insurance to cover an injured player, when the supervisors (coaches) are not qualified/trained in the area of expertise???????
