Sykes, Diane S.

Looks like decent qualifications so far, but can she read the Constitution right?

I agree with you... Karen Williams... she is smart, female, conservative, telegenic, and articulate. She is also on the "non-filibuster" list.

It will be very politcally difficult for moderate Dems (Landreiu, Nelson, Nelson, Carper, Lincoln, Pryor, et al) to oppose her.

Ok lets try this again not in the short hand of English. If I could write in a more formal language I would switch that. But here goes:

From the set of usually identified candidates that are said to be solid originalists, I like Estrada for both demographic and heritage. Also I like him for sticking it to the Dims who fillibustered him.

I am an economics prof. I know some economics. I know a bit about constitutional law. But I know that I have to focus my preference from among those the experts in constitutional law have identified. As an economist I also understand there are no sure things once someone has a lifetime appointment and no high position to strive for.

My only concern is that the bare fact that those who are generally "said to be originalists" isn't usually a very good predictor of that. I'm not trying to trash Estrada by raising any kind of innuendo against him, but if I'm to support him, I'd need to see some evidence of his originalism, from his writings and/or public statements. Is there anything at all available?

I agree and I agree that very few of us with opinions on this really know enough about these potential nominees to know who is actually an originalist. And unlike Coulter I understand that even if you nominate an originalist, they might drift on you as they have a lifetime appointment and no further appointment they are looking for.

Since I posted what I did about Estrada, I have seen discussions on confirmthem.com that view Estrada as steathy and wondering who much of an originalist he is. As I said as a not expert, my opinions in this area are subject to narrowing of the field by real experts.

Perhaps you are correct. But after what I just witnessed over the Miers nomination, I'm not so sure anymore.

Even after the antics of the gang of 14, McVain even shut up when he saw the reaction. I don't think he expected that. And now with the Miers controversy resolved (without a doubt from the overwhelming pushback of conservatives), I think McVain had better tread very carefully.

If Janice Brown can not be confirmed that the conservative movement is dead and it's time to play taps.

I hope you are right, but I see no evidence of this. It seems McCain believes the way to the Presidency is via the middle. Also, he hate Bush.
