Gov. George Pataki, eyeing a possible White House run in 2008, continued to shake the money tree Thursday with a little help from House Speaker Dennis Hastert.
Pataki was in Chicago for a $1,000-a-person fundraising luncheon to benefit his Virginia-based 21st Century Freedom PAC, the political action committee he uses to finance his national activities.
Later Thursday, the New York Republican was headed to Iowa for a two-day visit to the state that hosts the caucuses that traditionally begin the presidential nominating process. It is Pataki's third trip to Iowa in four months.
Pataki was coming off three days in California where he raised money for his PAC and met with potential donors.
The governor -- who is due back in New York on Friday -- began what is a six-day, four-state trip on Sunday with a stop in New Hampshire, site of the nation's first presidential primary.
In a letter to potential Pataki donors, Hastert invited them to the Chicago event, noting that when he took over suddenly as speaker in 1999, Pataki reached out to support him and offered to stage a New York fundraiser for the new House leader.
"Within one week of my swearing in as speaker, he organized a fundraiser that raised over six figures," Hastert wrote. "He supported members and candidates who needed help, and he became a great friend and ally. Governor Pataki's vital support came at a most critical time in my tenure as speaker."
Hastert said he was sponsoring the Pataki event "to thank him for all he has done for me since 1999."
The Hastert letter, first reported in Thursday's editions of The New York Times, did not say why Pataki was raising money. The governor announced July 27 that he would not seek a fourth, four-year term as New York's governor.
Why any Northeast liberal RINO Republican thinks he has any shot at the White House is beyond me but hey, it's his time and his donors money.
Laugh break ping
Why is Hastert supporting this endangered Northeastern RINO? Perhaps this explains why the House has been such a "do-nothing" body lately.
This is who we need to take on Hitlery! LMAO!
The fundraiser will be a waste of money. Denny should save the effort and raise money for good Republicans in '06, not has been rinos like Pataki.
Somehow this doesn't particularly enthuse me.
Pataki!? Besides being a northeastern liberal, he is just plain boring! Aren't there any conservative Governor's? What about Rick Perry? Can any Texas Freepers tell me about him? Does he have any presidential aspirations?
Ron Paul :)
Pataki is terrible. I live in NY and he is dreaming if he thinks he can win.
A lot of Texans aren't real happy with Rick Perry for a lot of reasons. One of the main complaints I hear regards his failure to rein in property tax increases. A poll of Houstonians I saw a few months back at LoneStarTimes.com, asking readers to submit responses to the question, "What has Rick Perry done for us as governor?" (I'm paraphrasing here, it was a few months ago) drew few positive responses. I'm not expressing my opinion here, just passing along what I have heard or read. I don't know if the responses are still up at LST, but you could try a site search there if you are interested in finding what conservative Texans think about Gov. Perry.
He'll make a few bucks and then no one will ever hear from him again.
Aren't we lucky!

Pataki is a rino but he is a moderate while Hillary is a raging feminist liberal.
I don't think some on our side truly understand how left wing Hillary is. Her voting record is to the left of Ted Kennedy. The ACU gave her a zero rating out of 100 last year.
I don't worry about people like Pataki running. I just say let him run - he'll be beat in the primaries. Nothing to worry about with him. I worry more about who is going to beat Hillary!
