You people need to read some history. Following a person rather than a philosophy is always dangerous for a society. When Bush is out of office, and planning his library, we will still have to struggle on just have we have for many years. Conservatism first, and everything else including this President that I still admire second.

Now Bush [tried to] has been completely undermined [himself] for the rest of his term. [But if he nominates a true strict constructionist to replace Meirs, and closes our borders, he will quickly regain control of his presidency and all of his lost popularity, if not more.]

I corrected the errors in your statement.

It's not about whether Bush has a setback for a couple weeks. It's about who is influencing our society for the next 25 years.

Don't go off the deep end! - I supported President GWB selection of Ms. Miers (I trust the man) - However it will now appoint someone else and it will be another fine choice. GWB second term is going to be just fine. Way too many on here blow EVERYTHING so far out of proportion it is silly.

I respectfully disagree. I voted for GWB twice, and I would enthusiastically do it again. He has done a great job prosecuting the war on terror, and his tax cuts have spurred investment and growth which have kept us out of a deep recession. But, his nomination of Miers was an exercise in arrogance (for reasons that have been mentioned here countless times). I sincerely hope he will now nominate a true conservative and take the fight right to Schumer, Leahy, Kennedy and Biden, which is what he should have done in the first place.

Since the hard right has chosen to undermine him in his first choice, the President is now free to pick whomever he wants. Can you say Justice Gonzales?

Bush shot himself in the foot but artificially limiting the pool of candidates by gender, by valuing his personal rapor over objective qualification.

The roll and lifetime term of SCOTUS is far more important than any single president.

When it was discovered she was for racial quotas, testified the NAACP was not political, praised the Ginsberg nomination, mocked the pro-life position which she'd apparently taken just years' earlier, said courts have to take on the roll of legislative bodies... it became clear the woman was MUSH. Her views were crafted to fit her audiences and so she would be a complete enigma on the court, fully open to outcome-based decisions.

If the next nominee is objectively qualified and shown to have a firm judicial philosophy of strict constructionism and judicial restraint, Bush's credibility will be affirmed.

Get over it. This is a huge win for the conservative movement. The libs had forced Bush to try to go the stealth route with Miers (with a Harry Reid recommendation, no less), and he simply did not expect the backlash from the base that he received. For the last 25 years, we've been asked to "trust" presidents. Those days are now over. We are THE force to be reckoned with now, and that's a great thing.

I'd be perfectly happy to reduce the President's role to that of war manager for the remainder of his term... everything else he has touched has turned to crap, like a Roto Rooter version of the Midas touch.

Wait a minute. Bush is undermined every day by the Left, the Democrats, and most of the news media. Nominating someone who appeals to his base will make him stronger.

Yeah it was a brilliant stroke by minority of conservatives that made up the anti-Miers crowd. Now, Bush has zero political capital, and has been undermined by the same people who supposedly voted for him last year. If the new nominee fails on the floor because they're too conservativ for the democrats and the RINOs, it's the fault of the gloating anti-Miers lynch mob. This will be remembered if that happens, and those who caused it will be pegged as conservative traitors, and rightfully so.

"You bet. They showed their power. Now Bush has been completely undermined for the rest of his term. Thanks guys."

Not if he names an acceptable candidate he won't be!
The conservative right is ACHING to come back together, at warp speed, and direct all of this anger and frustration outward at Democrats.
If Bush picks a good, strong, conservative candidate, a known quantity, the movement will welcome home the prodigal son with open arms, form ranks around him, and fight to the death for this nominee, and everyone will privately heave a great sigh of relief.

If Bush is petulant and names another unacceptable candidate, THEN it's really over.

No, he was reminded of his promise to appoint Supreme Court judges in the mold of Scalia and Thomas by those who put him in office. If he does so, his supporters will rally around him. Your opinion on this is shite.

You are right...the Dems will hold out until 2006-elections-hoping for a shift in the Senate. Janice could not get confirmed...the first time. Do people really think she will sail through this time?

Oh please. If anything, this will bolster his power for the rest of the term because the people that support him will continue to fight for him.

Of late, those people weren't doing that because they felt like they were kicked in the groin.
