Remember, we all share the same goal of putting originalists on the SCOTUS. If the President now nominates an originalist that is accepted by conservative pundits, they will quite happily support such a nominee. Perhaps his biggest mistake in the Miers nomination was that he put forward a candidate with no serious supporters, unlike Roberts who had almost universal support from people that matter.

I just know that if Bush does put up a Luddig/Owens type, and the Senate shows the same kind of pathetic spineless kind of behavior they have the past five years, that nominee will fail on the floor, IF it even gets out of committee. And if that happens, and we end up with a moderate or a liberal, because of that full floor failure, it will be the fault of the anti-Miers crowd.

The conservatives aren't.
They're praying to God Bush puts up a clear, known strict constructionist judge, in the mode of Scalia and Thomas.
Then they will close ranks and fight to the death, and the GOP will be saved.

If Bush tries another stealth candidate, or anyone but a known, proven strict constructionist conservative, there will be a civil war in the Republican ranks and it will be the end of the coalition.

He's got no maneuvering room here.
If he does the right thing, the movement will come back together at warp speed: nobody on the right wanted this fight. There will be a battle royale in the Senate, which conservatives will win if the nominee is good and the movement sticks together, fights for it, and disciplines Republicans who step out of line.
