Wow... the Navy Cross. The Marines don't give medals away... and especially not Navy Crosses.

Here's the e-mail I posted:

------

Thank you so much for this wonderful tribute to a fine Marine. It humbles me to read it.

The things that are happening there will resonate for decades. It really does matter, and it desperately needs to happen and it needs to be finished up right. Generations from now... the difference will be clear and obvious.

Thank you Captain Chontosh, and all of your fellow Marines.

The Navy Cross may be an interim medal. The story appears to be Medal of Honor quality. Very impressive.

You're right. I didn't hear anything about this.
That is why I no longer watch ABC, CBS, NBC. they are not
objective. They want to create tension to get people to watch
them, and I will not be part of it.
I would love to see more conservative newspapers started, and
a few local TV stations, even cable, that would present just
the news, and no editorials masquerading as news.
They glibly report outright lies, or manipulate words to make
the statements they make , even if they are true, implicate
their enemies.

IF that didnt merit a Medal of Honor, makes you wonder what does.

The Medal of Honor takes a long time to go through the approval process, so it's not unusual as far as I know to give an interim medal. One of the key points being awarded the Medal of Honor is that the recipient performed a courageous act that noone could have lawfully have ordered or expected him or her to do. In this case, the Captain probably could have set up a defensive position and called for backup. Noone would have thought the worse about him. Instead he stormed the enemy.

As far as I know, every other medal (including the Navy Cross, for example) you can be ordered or expected to perform the action that warrants it. Since he was the commander in this case, the only way you could argue that he doesn't deserve the Medal of Honor is that his storming of the insurgents alone was fully expected of him (due to his responsibilities). I don't think that is a powerful argument, so I believe that he will eventually receive the Medal of Honor.
