WASHINGTON—The federal prosecutor investigating the alleged involvement of White House officials in the leak of a CIA operative's identity spent most of the lunch hour today meeting with the chief judge of the federal district court in the nation's capital, Judge Thomas Hogan.
As reporters massed outside an elevator lobby leading to the grand jury rooms, the special prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, apparently slipped out a back exit to conduct the noontime meeting with Judge Hogan.
Mr. Fitzgerald declined to comment as he and a colleague emerged from the judge's chambers just before 1 p.m.
The prosecutor's visit to the chief judge could signal that Mr. Fitzgerald is seeking to extend the term of the grand jury that has been investigating the leak. Judge Hogan would need to approve any extension to the grand jury's term, which was set to expire on Friday....

What no one seems to realize is that if he wants to pursue additional avenues of inquiry, but feels that he's already presented enough evidence to indict certain targets, then what he would do is get the indictments he's already established and then impanel a new grand jury to continue the investigation.
Yeah, but if he gets an extension, it isn't an extension of THIS Grand Jury, which expires---am I right legal beagles? It's an extension of the investigation. He'd have to start all over again with a new GJ.
It could signal he's asking for permission to write a report.

What the Dems want is an indictment and a trial in DC, where the jury would convict a tree if it was a Republican tree. Even if any convictions are overturned on appeal, that process will not conclude before th 06 elections, and with a conviction against a couple of White House biggies the Dems have the ammo to retake both houses of Congress.
Clever politics, using the justice system to take down a president. The Republicans should have been more prepared.

WTH? Is this guy investigating the crime of the century? Most of us can't even figure figure out what he is investigating, as there seems to be no underlying criminal act!
If Fitzgerald does the right thing he can single-handedly take down the leftist socialist in this country. No politician, not even Bush, has the tools in his hands like Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald has the tools to do it. He should strike hard and now. Things could change very quickly once indictments are announced.

Yesterday, in Italy, Rocco Martino (sp) admitted to Italian authorities that he was on the payroll of France.
It had been reported that Fitz had been in Italy within the past 2-3 weeks re: the forged Niger docs.
Wilson's second wife has been described as French and a "cultural attache" at the French embassy.
It has been reported that Wilson knew about the Niger docs being forged before it was in the public domain????????
The theory of rogue CIA in cahoots with Plame/Wilson and others seems to make a lot of sense now.
Fitz' meeting with Hogan is for an expansion of the investigation.
Heck, my wife always told me I should write a spy thriller!
