No power, no gas, no water--and for many, no help.
South Floridians began to comprehend the long-term affects of Hurricane Wilma on Tuesday, as it became increasingly clear that residents could spend the next few days, if not weeks, waiting in lines for basic supplies, coveting working showers and toilets, and in many cases, kicking themselves for underestimating the damage a Category 2 storm could bring.

"Guess you didn't read prior thread that the government does not restore power"
How does that in any way relate to comment #41?
What were the evacuation orders for the east coast of Florida?
Martin and St. Lucie counties: A mandatory evacuation order started 11 a.m. Sunday for the barrier islands and all mobile-home residents. Martin County also is recommending other residents in low-lying areas leave.
Okeechobee County: A A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for residents living in RVs and mobile homes.

There's one; I'm sure there were more.
The big population centers are Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade, with a combined population of several million--at least 5 million, I think. They weren't expecting a big storm, and because they are much more populous than Martin and St. Lucie (which were hit relatively lightly, and at the northern end of the stack) a big evacuation would have faced the same challenges Houston faced before Hurricane Rita.
I think we need to take a close look at what southeast Florida was told to expect in the days before Wilma hit, because I don't remember anyone focusing on Ft. Lauderdale, of all places, being worst hit. Not with the storm making landfall on the Gulf Coast and predicted as a Category 2.
I do not recall Ft. Lauderdale and Miami getting warnings to get the hell out of Dodge because this was going to get bad. I think that before the blame gets out of hand, people should look and see if that was the message, or not.
I sure hope they can breathe in there!
I think you're missing the point. The whiners were complaining about ice and water, and other things. They weren't complaining about not being told to evacuate.
So, if they'd been prepared, they wouldn't need ice or water THE DAY AFTER the hurricane. They ignored the warnings to prepare and then they have the gall to complain that the gov't is not supplying them with what they should have supplied for themselves.
Well, I remember hearing the state of Florida talking about how they have ice and emergency supplies available at points all over the state and they're regularly replenished before emergencies. Couple that reassuring talk with the expectation that this storm was not going to do much damage to the heavily populated southeast coast, and it seems churlish to criticize them for believing the governor, who also couldn't have planned for a big hit on an area with 5 million people despite what the state was saying.
I also wonder why people CARE so much about whether people, hit by a hurricane, are complaining. No one makes you watch the news. Turn it off if they bother you.
Again, you think the government has an exclusive lock on information such that ordinary citizerns do not have access to TV or radio to asses the severity of the storm for themselves ? That citizens should take all direction from the government and not think or prepare for themselves ?
Who gives a rat's patootie what the state has stockpiled around ? Do it yourself, and you won't be complaining about standing in line for hours ! It seems to me that taxpayers should be outraged at the state helping those who could clearly do for themselves, but are too lazy or stupid to do so.
It's called self-reliance, and it seems you've forgotten that this is a commodity available to any individual with half a brain.
My parents live in Vero Beach and tracked the progress and severity of the hurricane for days, laying in supplies, getting gas for the generator and cars, and charging up the cell phone, and helping friends and neighbors to do the same. They lost power for a day and weren't standing in line for anything because they'd prepared. If a few 70-something year olds can do it, wouldn't you expect a 47 year old to be able to figure it out ?
Why do I care about the complaints ? If you've been following the news since Katrina, you'd have noticed some Senators and Reps who are proposing that the federal governmant take a primary role in disaster relief etc etc.
It affects my taxes, my freedoms, every time the government responds to more laws based on liberals complaints, and so I care about idiots making news when there's no counterbalancing force to say that the federal government is not obligated to do more.
Whatever. The state said "don't worry, we're prepared" and now you're attacking people for believing them. As far as I'm concerned you're just rationalizing your bitch session. You want to kick people when they're down, go ahead and do it, don't get sanctimonious about it.
It's getting to be a rather ugly game of Simon Says. However, the part that Simon said that they should have listed to, they ignored. They had 1 whole week to prepare.
Those kitties look remarkably calm, considering their situation . . .
Looks like their servant is taking good care of them.
listed= listened
For this one, he'd better bring Aquacat too.
I am a native Floridian that happens to have a Hurricanne Kit that is fully stocked for ANY emergency or disaster, a generator with a generator electrical generator panel to the house (not cheap to have installed, but nice when the power is out). It infuritates me to see people on the news complaining about reponse time and lack of supplies. For Christ's sakes, we knew Wilma was going to hit for at least 5 days before she hit!! Jeb was on the news ad nausem saying, "Make sure you have supplies for at least 3 days! We have ample supplies, but it will take some time for us to get it to you!"
