Dear Friends,
I just wanted to drop you a quick update from Team 88 and Lynn Swann in regards to his speech today to the Allegheny County Eggs and Issues Breakfast. It was a speech focusing on an issue that will prove to be Lynn's top priority -- job creation in the Commonwealth.
Lynn offered the crowd a bold plan for jobs - one that included significantly reducing business taxes, cutting the Personal Income Tax for every taxpaying Pennsylvanian, reforming our regulatory system, capping government spending, and having Lynn become our chief salesperson for attracting new jobs.
I just wanted to pass on some of the highlights...
"The tax structure of a state is the most important factor influencing the overall business climate. Our tax system in Pennsylvania is one that severely inhibits job creation.
Pennsylvania has some of the highest business taxes in the country, including the second highest Corporate Net Income Tax. Our rate is 46% higher than the national average.
We are one of the few states that have a corporate net income tax and a capital stock and franchise tax.
Our business taxes are 58% higher per employee than the national average."
Lynn went on to propose the following tax relief measures:
* Lowering and Reforming the Corporate Net Income Tax to 5.99% and changing the way we apportion the tax to a single sales factor.
* Speeding up the phase-out of the Capital Stock and Franchise Tax, one of the most onerous business taxes in the Commonwealth.
* Rolling back the Rendell Personal Income Tax Increase, this has cost Pennsylvania 33,000 jobs and Pennsylvanians money out of their wallets.
* Lifting the cap and making tradable Net Operating Loss, which will make Pennsylvania more attractive to bio-tech companies and start ups.
* Killing the Death Tax, which will phase out the double taxation of our wealth.
Lynn did not stop with tax relief though; he went on to talk about lessening Pennsylvania's regulatory climate.
"Pennsylvania is one of the most regulated states in the nation, and we need to do something about the burdens these regulations place on business."
Lynn proposed a cap on government spending, which he proposed as a way to stop politicians in Harrisburg from spending more than government needs.
"As many of you know, I am the former Chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and when I get to Harrisburg, we are going to put the spending habits of the politicians on a diet."
Lynn went on to promise that as Governor, he would be the state's chief salesperson.
"Once we have put into place the infrastructure to protect Pennsylvania jobs, you can rest assured that it will be my mission to sell a Pennsylvania that has lower taxes, less regulations, lower spending, and an improved image."
As you can see, it was a big day for Lynn Swann and Team 88. I just wanted to keep you updated.

More campaign promises in PA but I think anyone would be better than Rendell. Rendell runs around the state in his limo handing out block grants and everyone is grateful and the media loves it. Nobody seems to mind that this is taxpayer money. Rendell promised to reform property taxes too but never happened.
Swan was a good receiver but Stallworth was better.

Lynn doesn't have a snowballs chance. I predict he will not get past the primary.
This tax issue is the first time he took a stand on anything.
He's known in Pittsburgh and western PA, but a nobody where it counts.
If he doesn't get the support of the money republicans in east of the state, (and it looks grim on that note) he will be a nice also ran.
BTW, Hear tell the bikers of the state oppose him 100%. Not that they are a big constituency, but hey, 5,000 or so votes is a voter block.
Scranton will most likely take the primary and then get soundly thumped by Fast Eddie.

True. I doubt Swan can win because Rendell owns Philadelphia as the former mayor. Swan will win most counties but lose overall b/c of this.

Pa is strictly a "party machine" state.
The dems and repubs are identical on this note.
If you are not a party "player" and have not "payed your dues", (like Scranton has), you get Nadda.

I think I received something similar in snail mail. I would love to see Mr. Swann get in over Scranton, but I agree that Mr. Swann doesn't have a chance outside Pittsburgh. The problem too is that regardless of which Republican gets into the governor's mansion, he usually is not at all successful in getting anything even remotely reforming thruogh the state legislature. This is a largely Dem state and even the Republicans by and large are RINOs.
I do however wish Mr. Swann well.

There are loads of pubbies here in PA that are sick of politics as usual. If Swann gets a little momentum, the professional pols will jump on the bandwagon. There is nothing but victory that is important to the pros.

That's why I would like to see Mr. Swann get into the governor's mansion. It would be particularly great if we could clean house the next time members of the legislature are up for re-election. Had the greedy, do-nothing legislators been running now, what with the flap over the "cover of darkness" pay raise vote, many of them might be tossed out on their ear. But by next year or whenever these guys are running again, voters will forget and vote them back in. When that happens, even the most reform-minded governor, won't be able to change things in this clueless state.
Scranton unfortunately is just like the old man. If he gets in, it will be business as usual. And gawd forbid Rendell is re-elected.
