campaign allegedly waged by Muslims against the Christian minority in the city.

What hope does Israel have if Christendom (the West) prefers Bethlehem in the hands of Islam?

You can expect this sort of action by Muslims anywhere they gain a majority. It's the same tactic they've been using for over a thousand years to wipe out anyone they consider an infidel.

I wonder if the issue came up? And how they managed to find a reason to blame Israel?

If you are a Christian, or even if you're not, explain to me why Christians don't care.

I didn't say anything about Christians not caring. I said the Muslims have been using the tactic of gaining the majority in a town, city or country by living there peacefully. Once they gain the majority or close to it they begin terror tactics like are talked about in the article in order to force Christians, Jews and others either to convert, leave or die.

Reading this account in full, I am quite content with there being a significant separation between the Christian world and the islamic.

At this point, I would prefer the muhammadans to embark upon a one-way pilgrimage to the source of their black-hearted meteor-'god'...

In other words - "To the moooooon, Alice!"

That's almost far enough away for me to "feel comfortable" with them!

I'm saying it. The Moslems have Bethlehem only because Christendom (the West) has forced Israel to give it to them.

This Catholic/Christian does not. I can't even believe still, it seems incredulous, that Bethlehem has been turned over to the Muslims. We had been hearing for years from Priests we know who spent much time during each year in Israel about how things were changing, about the dangers of losing holy sites, of the dangers to the Israelis and the Arab Christians, many of whom have taken refuge in Jordan, I'm told. We don't hear as much these days and a couple leftie womens organizations are there but they don't care as much about the places like Bethlehem. I can still remember the first year the Pope didn't go to Bethlehem at Christmas. Many of these priests don't go any longer, they simply can't. I don't know what it will take to get people to realize the dangers posed.

Other Christians in Beit Jala disagree. According to a local physician, the plight of the Christians has been aggravated over the past decade in general and since the outbreak of the intifada in particular.

Aaah, the Clinton era. He sold out the whole region with his 'peace' plan and so many bought it. Gee, it turns out the Arab Muslims don't want to live peacefully with anyone in the place they call palestine, not even their Arab Christian brothers. Could Clinton have been wrong? (/sarcasm)

It's absurd that Muslim men who rape and murder Christian girls are given political asylum in Christian countries like Ireland, Spain and Italy."

Yes, it is. In fact, absurd is putting it mildly.

The irony as I see it, is that the three recent Presidents who most wore their Christianity on their sleave -or so pretended- Carter, Clinton and Bush II- are the ones most responsible.

Yes, good point, ironic indeed and I agree. I hadn't thought of it quite that way. Carter and Clinton, no surprise really, and Clinton's Christianity - a kind of veneer, like the polls told him it would be good for him, for votes and approval ratings. But Bush II, I have to admit I'm a little surprised. I didn't expect miracles, but... Carter had the hostage crisis. Clinton made 'peace' with all the Muslim peoples (Bosnia, Israel) or merely ignored their rampages (East Timor, Rwanda, the Sudan). And Bush? 9-11. Not really his doing or inaction, inherited from his predecessors errors. Not quite the ineptitude of his predecessors, but...

The God of Abraham protects Israel. He will smite 5/6 of any force arrayed against it.

"convert, leave or die."

Islam is itself a command: "submit/convert by any means necesary."
