Jeb Bush takes aim at Louisiana's hurricane effort

NAPLES, Fla. - While applauding state and local efforts to deal with the onslaught of Hurricane Wilma, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush took the opportunity Monday to blast what he said were Louisiana's failed attempts to deal with Katrina.

Bush said that unlike Louisiana, Florida organized local efforts to bring people to shelters and to transport evacuees.

"In Florida, we consider it a high priority and it's a bottom-up system," Bush said Monday at the Collier County emergency response offices. "In Louisiana, it was left for the federal government to fill the void, and you can see the consequences." Bush is the brother of President Bush, whose administration has been criticized for a slow, disorganized response after Katrina struck Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama in late August.

For Wilma, the governor said he had activated 3,000 National Guard troops in advance and another 3,000 were put on alert. "It's working the way it's supposed to," he said.

Bush said he was happy with the response and the minimal loss of life from Wilma. "It's relatively good news when you consider a Category 3 storm came through this morning, and loss of life is a possibility."

He also took the opportunity to take a poke at Key West residents who chose not to heed evacuation orders and at the news media. "Too many people stayed, and for the life of me I don't know why they stayed. They knew the storms were coming," Bush said.

He also chided television reporters for doing outdoor reports as Wilma barreled toward shore, complicating efforts to evacuate residents.

Pretending to lean over against the wind and holding an imaginary microphone, Bush said, "You set a bad example; that doesn't help."

I think they are trying to out-do the "storm stud" (Cantore).

It's really scary...when sheets of metal or worse are flying, reporters shouldn't be out there making it seem like it's not life threatening.

I heard a hotel owner tell a reporter that his facility (just outside the expected hurricane path) was full and 95% of the occupants were MEDIA.

This angered me so much as a few times that I've tried to get out of some of the hurricanes last year (st. Petersburg resident), the hotels were completely booked.

They should OUTLAW the media from going in if they are going to take precious hotel rooms from residents trying to get out harm's way.

I really do not wish to happen but it would be funny to see if one of those reporters get hit by something like in the movie the Day after Tomorrow. LOL

That my 2 cents...

I watched a bit of the FOX coverage yesterday with the roving reporter being blown all about and the transmission cutting out on every other word. One word for it....INSANE!

What an odd statement.

Good for Jeb;

. . . more needs to be said and often re LA's debaucle; because the Demrat's have and will continue to create and foster the LA myth like the every other myth they create to rewrite their own ugly history.

. . .and kudos to Florida for handling this one and without even the thought of crying their way to Washington.

Oh yeah a great reason to choose a President, how he handles Hurricanes. NOT!

He is more pro-undocumented aliens than his brother is.

I noticed some weather reporter from CNN or MSNBC (can't remember) was rather put off when she was kicked off Marco Island.

I don't like a lot of reporters but I don't want any harm to come to any of them.

Nasty hurricane season is merely part of a cycle - Nation/Politics ...
"Hurricanes, and especially major hurricanes, are cyclical," said Max Mayfield,
the center's director. "We'll have a few decades of really active hurricanes ...

It is insane, but it brings in ratings. People will watch it.

It's not that different from people rubbernecking as they pass an accident. Sheesh. Either pull over and try to help (but don't get in the way of emergency crews), call for help and/or say a prayer.

I saw "Stuck on Stupid Steve" Harrington on Fox
doing his look at me standing in the rain
and wind show yesterday. He said "There goes a
piece of sheet metal flying by." Does he not
know wind driven sheet metal makes an excellent
guillotine?

Many would agree - and say "we just need to flush a couple more times to finish the job".
