I agree that its a miscarriage of justice. A man is sentenced to life in prison for trying to soothe his pain. Richard Paley should get a full pardon and the Florida Legislature should change the laws. If someone needs a higher dose of pain-relieving medication, it shouldn't create a presumption that individual is an addict and doctors should be allowed to use their professional judgment to treat a delibitating condition humanely without running afoul of the law.

If only prosecutors could be prosecuted for using the law in ways that are just silly. The number of human beings walking around with no capacity for reason is just frightening. America is not supposed to be the country where people are thrown in jail and tortured for 'crimes' that hurt no one.

Change the name of the prisoner to Rush Limbaugh and see if the same results would happen!

I tend to believe him based upon my own experience with chronic pain.

I had moved to Dallas in August of 94 and during September found a primary care doctor I liked. In October of 94 as I was sitting on the porch I went to reach for my coffee and my arm wouldn't mind. It lasted for only moments but long enough for me to notice. I made an appointment to see my doctor, went in, had x-rays and it was found three of my vertebra in my neck were badly misaligned. I was sent to a neurosurgeon who performed a three level fusion (C3-C6) in November, 94.

I went back to work in December of 94 still with a high level of pain. I was able to work with the help of pain meds, muscle relaxers and physical therapy until July, 2000 when I had to retire early due to physical disability.

In June, 2001 I moved to rural SW Ok but continued to see my same doctor until September 2003 when we both determined it would be better for me to find someone closer. I had kept my same doctor because I wasn't sure I was going to stay in Ok and once I decided I was here, it was time for me to find a new doctor.

Yeah, right! Good luck on that one. I called every doctor in the town I lived in and in the next town over. They'd take my information up until I'd answer their question about "Is there any chronic condition?". Then they'd get very cool and tell me they didn't treat chronic pain patients. I felt like a pariah.

A dog bite saved me. My dog had been hit by a car the previous spring, had bit me when I tried to pick him up and I had gone to a Physician's Assistant here in my small town to have her look at it. She gave me a tetanus shot and sent me on my way. When I was calling around I had called her office and they also had told me they wouldn't see me because I was a chronic pain patient. After being turned down by every other office in the county I called her office back and pointed out they had already established a patient-PA relationship when she saw me for the dog bite.

They finally agreed to make an appointment to see me. I went in and she referred me to a pain specialist in another county. She sees me for my health and I see the other Dr. for the pain.

I won't drag my post out any longer to explain what I'm going through in order to switch to another pain doctor.

People who pass and enforce such mornic laws should spend a few months in terrible chronic pain as an educational experience. The policy of punishing people in chronic pain is indefensible and awful and a huge stain on the Bush presidency.

Totalitarian socialism - American style!

The pious liars and smug thugs who support these evil anti-drug laws should be put down like diseased animals.

Meanwhile, Florida set free the trio that aided and abetted in the murder of little Jessica Lunsford. Well, prosecutors have to set priorities....

It's a terrible story. It's horrid to treat someone with MS like this.
