The rumors of the candidacy of former Orleans Council President Peggy Wilson for Mayor are now confirmed. In an interview with The Louisiana Weekly, Wilson confirmed that she had met with a group of consultants and has begun fundraising for a bid for the city's chief executive post.
Three months ago, the idea that a Republican, much less a white Republican, seeking the Mayor's office would have brought nothing but the proverbial "guffaws" of the impossible or quixotic. Yet, with a February election looming, and most of the city's population gone, perhaps permanently, the former Council President's quest seems less unlikely.
A large portion of Wilson's former Council District A, silk stocking Uptown, was relatively unharmed by Katrina, and the term limits advocate is one of the few Republicans with populist enough appeal to pick up white votes in the normally Democratic bastions of the French Quarter, Fabourg Marigny, and Algiers-areas that survived the storm with little damage or population loss.
Race, however, plays the dominant card. The recent post-Katrina survey done by the Red Cross shows, however, that at best 40% of the population of Orleans Parish will be Black by February. Perhaps even less.

Not with Wilson. She is a fool.
Why is she a fool?
I won't be so naive to say race doesn't matter. Much of the mayor's constituency doesn't live there anymore - strike one. But in this case I would expect the locals to throw the bums out no matter if they are purple - strike two. Also in this case the mayor looked extremely pathetic in a crisis - strike three.
And Nagin's not a fool?
I can't imagine Nagin getting re-elected under any circumstances. His negligence cost lives.
Mostly local stuff.
While she was on city council, she screwed up the zoning of uptowen.
She supported the despicable Paulette Irons in the last mayoral election.
If she is going to be the republican in the race, than I may consider a run myself.
what are the chances that someone will mount an "absentee ballot" campaign with the voters who left town?
That's fine. But there are better candidates than Wilson to lead the massive rebuilding the city must undertake.
Do you do anything but repeat GOP talking points on this forum?
How do they find them? I've talked to several "evacuees," and they now consider Bedford, Texas, home. They have no intention of ever looking back at New Orleans, Louisiana.
Here is how the debates between the candidates will go.
Mod.
"Cand. A, are you too dumb to tie your own shoes"
Cand A. "No"
Mod
"Cand B., Are you too dumb to tie your own shoes"
Cand B..."No"
Mod.
"Cand C, are you too dumb to tie your own shoes"
Cand. C. "YES"
Mod. Congrats, Cand C., you win the office of Mayor of NO
The libs who have seen the power base shrinking are going to do one better than an absentee ballot campaign. They plan on opening polling places in Houston, Baton Rouge, Birmingham and Atlanta. The plan is so rife with fraud you can bet that Louisiana will execute it.
my concern is that someone would not try to actually find the absentee voters, just vote for them......it seems the potential for fraud would be huge
OMG THE HORROR!!!
Maybe if she would've cursed on TV or let schoolbuses sit submerged in water, you'd support her wholeheartedly?
Absentee polling places, that's a new one.
Do you do anything but whine?
Listen, bub. I can't help it if most of your fellow citizens have shaken the New Orleans dust off their feet. They're making Texas, and Arkansas, and other states their homes now. They want nothing to do with that hellhole where they once lived.
You're mighty touchy; but, I can understand it, since your city has permanently lost at least a third of its population.
If Ray Nagin loses his mayor's job, he's lucky. He ought to be prosecuted for negligent homicide.
Friends of ours out here in California have relatives from New Orleans living with them. They are not moving back.
That is how it has always been about New Orleans.
It is like the old "Little Moron" Joke:
Q: Why does the Little Moron hit himself on the head with a hammer?
A: Because it feels so good when he stops.
When one lives in New Orleans, one believes that one will never leave. [Where would one go? Houston? Atlanta?]
When one finally leaves, one has stopped hitting oneself on the head with a hammer ... and it feels so good ... one never goes back.
"I can't imagine Nagin getting re-elected under any circumstances. His negligence cost lives."
And I suspect anyone running against him that uses the hurricane against him may be given a tour of Fort Marcy park.
