Civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks has died, Local 4 has learned.

Parks, 92, reportedly died around 7 p.m. Monday at St. John Hospital on Detroit's east side.

Parks' refusal to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Ala., in 1955 landed her in jail and sparked a bus boycott that is considered the start of the modern civil rights movement. The bus is on display at the Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn.

Parks, was born on Feb. 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Ala. She lived in Detroit.

We don't get many opportunities to brag about Detroit, but this is one of them.

The whole nation owes a debt a gratitude to this woman's courage.

And we're a week or so away from dumping the "hiphop" mayor and re-starting Detroit's rebuilding.

"Bubba will be all over this like white on rice (so to speak). After all, he and Miss Parks rode the bus together, didn't they?"

As BJ would say, "that all depends on what "rode" is."

The responses in this thread just shows how much incredible class the conservatives have on this website. God bless her soul.

I worded that wrong. I didn't mean to get down on Detroit, I just thought she lived in Atlanta for some reason.

As the granddaughter of a tough as nails Texas-born vaquero who once wept openly when denied a carry-out order of burgers for his hungry family, due to the "No Mexicans" sign at the cafe, I know he'd be holding his Stetson over his heart tonight for her if he were alive.

No offense taken, of course. In January we all wonder what we're doing up here. :-)

She was a great woman, but I wonder why she picked Detroit to retire?

I dunno, maybe to be close to family or friends? Maybe to make a difference in that community?

RIP.

She left us at age 92. The things she saw in this life. My grandmother is 91. Every single day is a privilege and a blessing while I still have her.

Rest in peace, Ms. Parks.

Rosa Parks was a member of the Communist Party USA

A lot of folks were communists or fellow-travellers at one time. Whittaker Chambers, Eldridge Cleaver, David Horowitz. Need I go on?

God rest her soul.

Such courage in those times!

Surely she knew how others had been lynched, murdered, or 'disappeared altogether' in those same times and chose to make a difference regardless.

After Condi's appearance in Alabama this weekend, wouldn't it be fitting if somehow Condi represented the Administration in an important fashion at this funeral?

Rosa: Good and faithful servant, rest in peace.
